[opensuse-factory] About dropped packages -- xmms
HI some time ago i asked about dropped packages policy [1], coolo answered that "But lately "dropped" means often: moved from Factory to some build service project.". So yesterday I searched for one of the my favorite application: xmms using webpin, in Factory only one result was: xfce4-panel-plugin-xmms, iirc it requires xmms, but where is xmms?? OK in coolo's answer there's the "often" word, but I don't understand why was it dropped. I searched the bugzilla, no bugs shown regarding to xmms. Yes I know what ppl are saying about xmms, but I like it and imho other people likes it too. What are saying ppl bad about xmms? some examples: 1. unmaintained. false: [2] [3] 2. it's buggy, as i said no xmms bugs in bugzilla 3. uses gtk 1. so? gtk1 is in Factory etc btw I thought that "the mission" is to have more and more packages not to drop packages btw it's funny that the latest version of BitTorrent is v5.0.9, but Factory has 4.0.3 PS: I don't want to use audacious Regards [1] http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-factory/2007-07/msg00129.html [2] http://cvs.xmms.org/cvsweb.cgi/xmms/ [3] http://www.xmms.org/next_version.php -- Andy --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

According to project website[1], xfce4-xmms-plugin works with xmms AND Beep or Audacious players. No need to require xmms. But the rather sooner than later plan is to get rid of gtk1 I think.
the latest version of BitTorrent is v5.0.9, but Factory has 4.0.3
That has another reason: BitTorrent v5 introduced DHT (Trackerless Torrents), a feature we disable/patch away also within KTorrent for some legal reason. Obviously disabling/patching away this feature in BitTorrent is complex. Thats probably a long way off, there are still little dark corners that use gtk1 for custom in house apps, proprietary apps etc. (As opposed to GNOME 1.x we've dropped like a hot potato). -JP -- JP Rosevear <jpr@novell.com> Novell, Inc. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

I understand the gtk1 part but I wonder what the replacement application would be? I haven't found a proper replacement yet given that I don't use KDE or Gnome and like lightweight applications for that purpose. I have to admit that I use amarok once in a while but that's overkill for my usage. as current version of audacious14 (64-bit) does not like something about installed curl, it does not play streams. bmp is dead, so only remaining choice is xmms. ain --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

I tryed to use Audacious, but it can't add a complete directory such as xmms to the playlist. I has about 2500 songs, and with xmms I can add it in one pass. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

The 10.2 packages of xmms still work fine on 10.3 at the moment, I still have them installed :) I really think it would be nice to have on the build service though. I heard that xmms2 is interesting, but unfortunately it's not in openSUSE as well, not even in the build service. I think it would be good if xmms would be available from build service at least until GTK1 really gets killed. With that, people have a location to find it if they want it, even if it's not included in the default distro. Don't underestimate the amount of users this old sucker still has - and if it's just for simplicity and theme compatibility with those nice old Winamp themes ;-) Robert Kaiser --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

As soon as xmms2 is in a usable state, I'm sure it will be included. xmms was dropped because a) it's a gtk1/glib1 package and b) isn't maintained anymore upstreams. What about creating GNOME:GNOME1. I can move there related gtk1, libgnome1 packages from GNOME:STABLE and GNOME:UNSTABLE and add xmms. If anybody will want more there, it will be up to anybody to add more GNOME1 packages. -- Best Regards / S pozdravem, Stanislav Brabec software developer --------------------------------------------------------------------- SUSE LINUX, s. r. o. e-mail: sbrabec@suse.cz Lihovarská 1060/12 tel: +420 284 028 966 190 00 Praha 9 fax: +420 284 028 951 Czech Republic http://www.suse.cz/ --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Just going to born. http://build.opensuse.org/project/show?project=GNOME%3AGNOME1 http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/GNOME:/GNOME1/ I am deleting these packages from GNOME:STABLE and GNOME:UNSTABLE. xmms* will be there. I can try to revive the rest of GNOME1 from last pre-drop state as well. -- Best Regards / S pozdravem, Stanislav Brabec software developer --------------------------------------------------------------------- SUSE LINUX, s. r. o. e-mail: sbrabec@suse.cz Lihovarská 1060/12 tel: +420 284 028 966 190 00 Praha 9 fax: +420 284 028 951 Czech Republic http://www.suse.cz/ --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org
