Hi, topics: 1. fontconfig 2. gcc 4.1 3. "Edge Distribution" renaming Ehe fontconfig package in current Edge sync is hopeless broken, even the "fc-cache -f" workaround does not help anymore. After installing the fontconfig package from 10.0 the system works nicely here. We put the old fontconfig package into Edge until the upstream becomes usable again. It should get out today with the next sync. We will also go for gcc 4.1 branch update the next days. It does work quite good, all ICE (internal compiler errors) which happend during build are fixed and I do work already on such a system. However, the new compiler has of cause again new stricter checks for C and C++ code, so not every code which did compile before will get accepted. Another issue, we will need to rename the "Edge" distribution. There were confusions with "Edge Server" solutions. I consider it better to rename it now than to do it later. However, we do not have a new name for it. Does anyone have any suggestion ? bye adrian -- Adrian Schroeter SUSE Linux Products GmbH, Maxfeldstr. 5, 90409 Nuernberg, Germany email: adrian@suse.de

I thinks it's better just to use 'unstable'. This way you can avoid confusions and don't flood the list with questions like: "What is the edge/whatever-will-be-called?" Something like SUSE-unstable/SUSE-$VERSION-unstable linked to SUSE-$VERSION-Codename-unstable will be great. A reason why I do not like "unstable" or "daily" or alike is that it is not clear that you are running a SUSE Linux when talking about. When people say they are on "Cooker" for example, it is clear that they are on Mandrake. Another reason is that we have the goal make this distribution usable for daily usage in future. Of course not that perfect as a a released version, but it should really become usable every day usage by every a little bit experienced user. "Unstable" would give the impression that it is okay to break it which I would like to avoid. bye adrian -- Adrian Schroeter SUSE Linux Products GmbH, Maxfeldstr. 5, 90409 Nuernberg, Germany email: adrian@suse.de

Well, you could go down the surreal path and call it "Elephant" :) Seriously though, how about "Factory"? The idea being this is the factory floor where SUSE is designed, built and made. -- James Ogley james@usr-local-bin.org Packages for SUSE: http://usr-local-bin.org/rpms Make Poverty History: http://makepovertyhistory.org

I would suggest something lizardlike. "Geeko" ? :) "Eggshell"? Ciao, Marcus

Debian has unstable Conectiva had snapshot Mandriva has cooker We have factory. That sounds interesting. There's also the traditional "devel" that can be used here... :-) -- Jorge Godoy <jgodoy@gmail.com>
