[opensuse-factory] RFC: Dropping xsane in favour of simple-scan from the default gnome pattern
Hi! I would like to request considering dropping xsane (the scanning application so the default in openSUSE GNOME) from the default gnome pattern in openSUSE 12.1 in favour of simple-scan [1], which is (as the name suggests) a much simpler and, in my opinion, more usable scanning utility. Simple-scan is also a gtk3 app making it integrate nicely in GNOME 3+. Please note that the request is to drop xsane from the default pattern alone, but not to have it removed from the OSS repo at all. Anyone who wants to use xsane instead could still do a "zypper install xsane" and with the default repositories enabled that would be that. For factory testers, simple-scan is already in Factory, and you can simply do "zypper in simple-scan" to install and start testing simple-scan. xsane should already be a part of your installation at the moment. A few observations: * no fast preview scan that I could find * no colour/gamma correction * no selectable scanning area * ... Is the proposed move toward this as the default application part of the i-ification of the world? Dropping everything that is useful, just to make it look good? never used simple-scan, but skanlite (which wouldn't be first choice for GNOME users, probably). nevertheless, skanlite does have a quick preview scan and allows to select the scan area -- and is much simpler than xsane. re. color correction, IMO that belongs into an image editor, not a scan program.

of course; an act of solidarity with the departing mac-boss, whats-his-name... -- phani. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

much better when done by the scanner (like using raw versus jpeg) jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://www.youtube.com/user/jdddodinorg http://jdd.blip.tv/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

but you don't have to compress to jpeg after scanning. saving to tiff or other losless formats, you still got all the info. the scanner produced. of course, if you deal with the RAW file before it's converted to anything, that probably gives better results; but then you end up with a scan program as large as xsane - and for most of my quick scan jobs i don't need that. (btw, is it possible to use xsane w/o being root now? last time i tried, it wouldn't even start for a normal user.) -- phani. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

ah, thanks; once i get my scanner back i'll try that. -- phani. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Add user to "lp" group.
Don't. In fact never blindly add users to random system groups just because some device or directory is owned by that group. Adding users to the lp group on older distributions is equivalent to full root access. In newer distributions it allows to at least disturb cups. xsane is supposed to work as non-root just fine for most scanners. If it doesn't for some reason try using saned. The alternative is to fiddle with udev rules to get device permissions but that's likely more error prone than just using saned. cu Ludwig -- (o_ Ludwig Nussel //\ V_/_ http://www.suse.de/ SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, GF: Jeff Hawn, Jennifer Guild, Felix Imendörffer, HRB 16746 (AG Nürnberg) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

I have to scan in full resolution just to find out that the paper got out of place when closing the scanner cover? Already that sounds like a showstopper to me.
* no colour/gamma correction
Not a real problem, but doing it directly in the scan (with better color depth available?) can be an advantage.
* no selectable scanning area
Another showstopper - my (quite old) scanner is damm-slow and I would go crazy if I had to scan a full page in color mode just to get a 5x5 cm area... Another question: I always use the xsane integration in GIMP. Is there a similar integration for simple-scan?
