[opensuse-factory] Force disable LVDS Downclock on intel graphics?
Hello, I am running Tumbleweed off openSUSE 12.1. In the past i used "i915.lvds_downclock=1" as a power saving measure on my laptop, but realised that it caused annoying screen flickering and made it impossible to use an external display. So i disabled this option and have had a functioning laptop since then. However since i ran zypper dup last week and updated the kernel to 3.4.6-34, this display instability has returned. When i plug in an external monitor via HDMI (or VGA) i can sometimes use it for a couple of minutes before the graphics card starts switching the output between displays and flickering, rendering it impossible to use. It is often worse if i only use the external display (i.e. disable laptop display). I suspect this is due to some kernel change which has allowed the lvds downclock power saving measure to work (i.e. without being forced). Can anyone confirm this? Also can i force disabling this option by entering in "i915.lvds_downclock=0" at the kernel line? What was the last working kernel? 3.4.5? Does kernel-vanilla-3.4.6 work? thanks, - -- js suse labs -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2.0.18 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with Mozilla - http://enigmail.mozdev.org/ iQIcBAEBAgAGBQJQElGhAAoJEL0lsQQGtHBJoLAP/3GdCdwxjjH41qS49OSneGrT cqw0fPZlBDD42nISsI7j3+VPJT2y/mo3n1w2P7G2g4+oIf/grz3MIBtRyFPRtrvL aiybJWXgK/GIiioCgy4+5G2An1Yc5N6D7a9spVkBNgnioWi9nRaexRxubuZ18vJv a+QRhy8oufHH1qLLXU1GdWsRt1S8PzmnwgNsj+x9y+c7+GX4ynVdiMndHId+wR0S oNqakPVDEkoQBQVJ0nNDmDqPdhnYxg6MjPV+9j2g89OttJDOrt1xZwCIJgRNFmv2 ptsLMKdND2KSNNOCRL8tRGrpYsdsjr/PQmJHdvWzRR5O4eSS8VFIlW+ZbleSZ2kc YYt5hrOFRbuNR3Q9h/pk2ttc9gDRZ4ILo+unWDrsaMYpD7UWD4kx79FtzAJbxe89 VXzxT7PNP10cm+QkVcUaL+XCKo65LSbd3e42i6FHwv870KxTe4DUh21Lp18avqCL LDnlezciecNlFYeagv60X7ECttid+v0bUpPFRH3y61355ZNVU7YJXe6JsMhMmg/t jPHerWDoFObD9DzD0M5DHvh+PNk7XeYrPRh5WwEWhZp76thZLvnBlNJm/ig/pT93 9dbXt3IsnRFUwc/m9olp7EwoWHs+c+GtTqgpGV4LZd78HWBtMmRs2e0ok78RkxW+ KGCKwJtVaWY3jmj2EKV4 =14iO -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org
Sorry for the delay in responding. I can't remember exactly what the last kernel was, but i'm guessing it was 3.4.5. Have not tried kernel-vanilla-3.4.6, i am running kernel-desktop. I have noticed that there is a new update to 3.5, so will update to this and see if that improves anything. Regards, Trent On 27 July 2012 18:30, Jiri Slaby <jslaby@suse.cz> wrote:

I have updated to 3.5 and still no change. The problem seems to persist for the first half and hour or so of usage, then after that i can connect my laptop to an external display without random switching. It does appear to happen all the time when i am running of battery only. The only thing i can do to make the display usable again is by unplugging display cable and killing X with ctrl-prntscr-k. This problem occurred frequently before when i had used the "i915.lvds_downclock=1" option, but disappeared after disabling, so i'm assuming it is related to this. Will try forcing lvds_downclock=0 option and then try vanilla kernel. Cheers, Trent On 31 July 2012 09:35, Trent Hawkins <trent.hawkins83@gmail.com> wrote:
