[opensuse-factory] Tumbleweed and NVidia / Gallium3D
Hi. I thought about upgrading to Tumbleweed instead of 12.1 in November however according to the Wiki page it does not really work with proprietary NVidia drivers. As I don't need the best performance, I wouldn't mind using the Gallium3D-based Nouveau driver but unless I missed something, nothing Gallium-related is included in the repo. Is there any chance to see Gallium3D drivers included into Tumbleweed in the foreseeable future? You are aware that in November, Tumbleweed will be almost identical to plain 12.1? -- Stefan Seyfried "Dispatch war rocket Ajax to bring back his body!" -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Ok, I just wanted to make sure since it sounded like "12.1 might be too bumpy so I'd take Tumbleweed instead" :-) It should work. -- Stefan Seyfried "Dispatch war rocket Ajax to bring back his body!" -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Some people do successfully use the drivers with Tumbleweed, see the forum for details as to how to do it, but remember you are on your own here.

Do you have a pointer to where they are in Factory? thanks, greg k-h -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Strangely enough they are in 11.4 but not in Factory. I found Mesa including the Nouveau3D driver in Tumbleweed:/GNOME. No idea who put Mesa in GNOME... I guess the GNOME sub-repo is not automatically included when enabling Tumbleweed, right? Tumbleweed and 12.1 will converge and be the same for a short while and then diverge as Tumbleweed progresses and 12.1 is locked at one place in time. That would be a good time to experiment with the nvidia proprietary drivers. As far as I recall, no one who uses Tumbleweed and stays with nvidia has had a serious problem with the proprietary drivers. There is an install help sheet on this link: http://forums.opensuse.org/content/38-swerdna-nvidia-opensuse-tumbleweed-har... And ppl in the TW forum who will help you. But of course, there is always the Nouveau option if it gets too hard. I don't like nouveau yet (on my computer it's not too good). It will improve of course, but for now I'm locked to nvidia and find it easy to use. Hi, Been using Tumbleweed for some time, now. So far, no major problems with it and nVidia propietary drivers. You simply need to be careful and, on the first reboot after a kernel upgrade, switch to the console (Alt+F1), stop X, unload nouveau driver, manually recompile the nVidia drivers as the above link suggests, and then restart X. It would be nice if those kernel-dependent packages were also included in TW, and upgraded accordingly. It would make life easier, although I guess there is a lack of manpower to do so. Another problem with Tumbleweed is that not all available repositories are compiled for it, so sometimes you are a bit lost when it comes to installing software not provided by the base repositories or TW itself. I had this problem when trying to install TuxPaint for my kids, which is under openSUSE's Education repository, which is compiled i.e. for Factory but not for TW.
