Hi
I have a question that seems to get mixed answers.
On news.opensuse.org it has been stated by people that we can update from the beta to the release candidate to then the final release without having to download and do a fresh install.
yes using zypper dup
However on the Opensuse Forum, the moderators speak against it saying that we should do a clean install because config files from the beta could be left behind.
config files may be different, or maybe not ;) if you have modified the configuration files they shouldn't be replaced.
So clarifying, I guess this means that unless you specifically edited text files, or maybe used YaST to edit any settings (highly likely) then the files that were changed probably won't be replaced. A scenario I wasn't entirely aware of. The only way you know for sure is to do a complete fresh rebuild. If you keep your home directory alive though it will remember your wireless network settings, wallpaper etc, though I don't know what implications that has. There is nothing new about this. When an rpm package is updated, config files some times are replaced, some times are not, and you get a bunch of .rpmnew, .rpmsave config files to revise later. You get this behavior even when you do security updates via YOU on the stable distro. I will simply do a zypper dup as always, then check, as always. If it gets too bad, then I reinstall. This is factory, so problems are to be expected. - -- Cheers, Carlos E.
