[opensuse-factory] Is Artistic license permitted in Factory?
Recently I had two packages rejected from Factory (including an important part of KDE3) because they include parts licensed under Artistic license. But it seems that Factory includes packages, licensed under Artistic, for example, https://build.opensuse.org/package/view_file?file=artistic-license.txt&package=rman&project=openSUSE%3AFactory&srcmd5=b7c5b193cef923c095c7eb6bfad10f45 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Just for the record, it looks as though that list of licenses was imported directly from the 'corresponding' Fedora page. Fedora decided (based on the FSF explanation) that the Artistic 1 license is not acceptable. The license is not approved by the OSI (Open Source Institute) either (http://opensource.org/licenses/alphabetical) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

with some edits. But this page is still under construction (and will stay so until the foundation is up and a legal team review it, so for a long time :-) no personal advice about artistic licence :-( jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://pizzanetti.fr -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

The problems that the FSF (and Fedora) identified with the Artistic 1 license certainly are valid - the license is quite vague and there are numerous places where more clarity would be helpful. However, the same is true of many licenses, the FSF's own GPL included. The lack of OSI approval is another issue that I think weighs more heavily against the Artistic 1. As the license appears to be deprecated (and used only in the context of the Perl specific dual license option), I am opposed to allowing its inclusion (but my assessment is that the actual legal risk of including software licensed under the Artistic 1 license is not higher than other similar licenses) and my advice would be to not include it - but from a practical perspective. I am aware that this may cause problems for existing packages... -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

According this page it is OSI certified: http://dev.perl.org/licenses/artistic.html -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

It was once, but now it is in the "superseded and/or retired" category - the URL says it all: http://opensource.org/licenses/do-not-use.html

"The following licenses have been superceded or retired by the steward (creator) of the license. They **should not** be used to license any **new code**." (emphasis added) Old code (prior to the retirement of the license) should definitely be accepted. New code (posterior to the retirement of the license) should *perhaps* be accepted. Needless to say, it's all IMHO. I do not dictate policy. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org
