[opensuse-factory] Question about Software Manager in YaST
I just re-installed (yes, again, because the devil made me do it) openSUSE Beta #2 - and, yes, once again, the full DVD, Build #452, ISO one. After installation, all files were upgraded/updated/whatever. And mostly done using zypper. (And whoever invented zypper deserves the Nobel Prize! YaST need not even think about it :-( ...) Can someone please tell me when the Software Manager in YaST is expected to be made usable once again? Usable as in not suddenly disappearing off the screen when one left-clicks on an application to select it for installation? Any information would be gratefully, and most humbly, accepted and recognised. Thank you. AFAIK, it is one of known issues that made 12.2 release be delayed till September. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. The problem was already mentioned some weeks ago so what you are asking for must already be in the archives. BC just to make it clear... the bug, which had many incarnations, was first reported on 26/04/2012... was discussed on irc and on mailing list quite few times... and if someone who is remotely interested in factory is asking for a bug number I may start to think.
Basil did you try yast:head repo? http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/YaST:/Head/openSUSE_Factory/ please try and report. No, I haven't tried it. I have never heard of it. I have never heard of anything with "/Head" in it until someone mentioned "/Head" several days ago in relation to the kernel (to which I responded that, while I did enjoy living dangerously, I used the "/stable" part for the kernel in install). Now you mention "../Head/openSUSE_Factory/". How many other such hidden/"funny"/unknown/covert repositories are they which people have access to to try and solve their problems? I'll try out the repo you mention ASAP (probably tomorrow morning, my time) and see what occurs. Thanks for the giving the name of this repo. my thoughts were that the bug report would probably be the very best place to look to see what kind of progress is being made, and thereby guess when there might be resolution.. yes, i could have searched for the bug report myself--but so could the OP! however, you could be correct in that bugzilla may not be useful in *predicting* either when the bug will be resolved, or the weather next month. so, maybe subscribe to [opensuse-crystal_ball] is the best bet. on the other hand, it is vacation time in europa and there might be very few folks either polishing the spheres or making predictions on that list, or any other.. dd -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org
good one, but I doubt sarcasm works... the good news is that today between 9:48-9:52 BST, yast2 software did not crash... I use the packages from yast head repo give them a try and maybe you are lucky... I just checked the first bug report on the issue was reported on 26/04... There was no sarcasm intended nor inferred. It was a straightforward question because this problem has been hanging around for some weeks now.

It doesn't crash on all selections. It crashes on "selected" files - eg, vlc.
I just checked the first bug report on the issue was reported on 26/04...
Well, there you are, and you are talking about "sarcasm" :-( . I thank you for you invitation to participate in those 2 bug reports. This is the first time ever that someone has invited me to participate in such an exercise which is why I feel quite flattered and am therefore thanking you :-) . However, the problems you mention in those 2 reports are not the same as what has been reported earlier and which I am experiencing as well as others. And to clarify what I stated in my original post to which you responded (above), "Not sure what you are talking about,...", when the Software Manager in YaST, activated from the System Settings menu, is running and one wants to install a particular application/rpm/file such as, let's see.... try vlc, and left-clicks on its tick box the Software Manager just goes....pooof!....disappears!...gone without even a simple, Had a Lot of Fun from Your openSUSE Team? :-) . Now, zypper is fully functional and the only way at the moment in 12.2 to get (most of) the software installed. Although, I think, if my memory serves me correctly, running 'yast' as root from a command line, when one boots into level 3 at the grub boot menu, works correctly and it doesn't do the Houdini disappearing act :-) . Ok, yes, I also saw it. But because I mostly use the yast ncurses interface, I did not suffer that much (I think the ncurses interface is not affected--at least, I just was able to select "dolphin" (for testing) and install it with all its dependencies).
Now, zypper is fully functional and the only way at the moment in 12.2 to get (most of) the software installed.
And yast's ncurses interface, IMO.

Yeah, this ensures that you run the ncurses interface (if I got you right). Of course, you can also use the ncurse interface in regular X session: start an xterm, 'su -' to become root, and enter 'yast'. -- Karl Eichwalder SUSE LINUX Products GmbH R&D / Documentation Maxfeldstraße 5 90409 Nürnberg, Germany GF: Jeff Hawn, Jennifer Guild, Felix Imendörffer, HRB 16746 (AG Nürnberg) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org
