Hi there, I just did a new installation (no upgrade this time) and was kind of surprised to see the network device name is "eth0" again. I thought that we switched to the so called "predictable network device names" quite some time ago. Not that I don't like to see "eth0" again (by default - on my other systems I had to apply manual changes in order to stick with the former names), but I thought I'd ask if this change of policy happened intentionally. TIA, cheers. l8er manfred

If I'm not wrong, predictable network interface names is enabled by default in TW but that should not be the case in Leap which uses persistent network names.

but, where did these "persistent" network names come from then? As I wrote, this was a *new installation* without any reference to former installations, so I cannot imagine, where this notion of eth0 comes from... Yes, I know, bus enumeration, speed of devices to respond etc., but what does this have to do with "persistent network names" in a new installation? FWIW, I have three interfaces (two eth and one wlan) on this system, and I simply don't know, why eth0 won over eth1. Hmmm. Cheers. l8er manfred

Hmm, yes, I think I can imagine what "persistent network names" means... Just follow what had been found during installation... Dunno what sense this makes, as after a reboot, eth0 and eth1 usually got swapped in the past. OK, anyhow/way/... Cheers. l8er manfred

These names are assigned by the kernel, probably this document [1] could clarify some of your doubts about predictable vs persistent https://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/systemd/PredictableNetworkInterfac... . Yes, I know, bus enumeration, speed of devices to respond etc.,

As I said, Leap 15.1 should be based on SLE-15-SP1. Although we give predictable network interface names a try during SLE-15 development as you can see in this blog post [1], it finally was not adopted. So for Leap 15.X it should be the same, that is the classic naming scheme. If you want to force the use of predictable network interface names, then, giving biosdevname=1 net.ifnames=1 should work. https://user-images.githubusercontent.com/7056681/54203731-b1e26e80-44ca-11e...

No way, I just accepted the proposal related to "*Server*" whats'o'ever role. And, indeed, these are the only packages with udev in their name: udev-234-lp151.25.4.x86_64 udev-configure-printer-1.5.7-lp151.6.3.x86_64 libudev1-234-lp151.25.4.x86_64 Cheers. l8er manfred
