How is one supposed to deal with this problem in the context of the not-so-technically minded? LAN setup where one host acts as X server for another, using xdmcp and permitting inbound tcp on port 6000 and a remote-login. I.e. the KDE desktop runs on the remote host, but is displayed locally. All works fine - until firefox comes along. A click on the firefox icon does nothing - the thing takes hours to start up and runs like molasses. Turns out the firefox binary on remote is opening a tcp connection to the local X server host port 16001 - something esd related. The port is blackholed of course, like everything not explicitly needed, and the timeouts make ff unusable. Does this mean one has to not bother with running a firewall to ensure things run (same as opening all other random ports), or that ill-behaved applications are trouble, or... ?
