[opensuse-factory] Cups >= 1.6
Hi all, GNOME 3.9.90 comes with a requirement for cups 1.6 (1.6.2 was released in March). The functionality offered: + Printers: - Poll remote CUPS servers for notifications. Is there a specific reason that we do still have cups 1.5.x in Factory? Any chance to update this? I think the incompatibilities may be an issue. Thanks.. incompatibility is now what we want at this stage; I already looked at the issue from 'the other' side and it was rather trivial to make it build with cups 1.5 without loosing functionality (the cups 1.6 getter/setter functions were used; so I just added macros to fall back to the old style direct access). So, let's stay with 1.5 an let's see to get upgraded for 13.2. Actually the problems are not that big and mostly target the enterprisey customers anyway. With the 1.0.36 release of cups-filters we should be ready to provide almost 1:1 mapping for day to day usage. (That reminds me I should really bump that thing in dev repo, probably today at some point when I find some spare cycles.) Given the fact Apple won't be releasing anything on 1.5 series we might actually rather push for 1.6 it on 13.1 to ease up the maintenance burden. Cheers Tom

Long list :) anyway: as mentioned later in my thread I 'fixed' gnome-control-center to stay compatible with cups 1.5. Dominique -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Yes - many incompatible changes. Currently I cannot tell when the upgrade from CUPS 1.5 to CUPS 1.7 will happen. Current upstream has already CUPS 1.7rc1 and because the 1.7 series is primarily a "polish" release (see http://www.cups.org/articles.php) I intend to skip CUPS 1.6 and upgrade directly to CUPS 1.7.

Very many thanks for that! It removes the pressure to upgrade CUPS right now. I expect that desktop toolkits and application programs will require the new APIs in CUPS >= 1.6 to implement dynamic printers support directly on their own (so that they do no longer need dynamic printers support via the traditional "CUPS Browsing"), see https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=735404#c15 FYI: See in particular https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=735404#c18 and https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=735404#c24 Kind Regards Johannes Meixner -- SUSE LINUX Products GmbH -- Maxfeldstrasse 5 -- 90409 Nuernberg -- Germany HRB 16746 (AG Nuernberg) GF: Jeff Hawn, Jennifer Guild, Felix Imendoerffer -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org
