[opensuse-factory] Is there something the matter with the nouveau driver?
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi, The nouveau driver is not in the oss repo. It was in 11.0, it disappeared in 11.1, it is not back in 11.2, where it can only be found in a home repo. A year ago, 2008-11-30, Marcus Meissner wrote in this mail list, in reply to a question from Rajko M: ] Is no longer on 11.1, was dropped. ] ] It can be found in the oS buildservice. <http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-factory/2008-11/msg01228.html> But why? Is it bad, wrong, too experimental? What? This is a genuine question, I want to know if I can try it because I have problems with the NV driver (it crashes on restore from hibernation) If I read in /var/log/Xorg.0.log (oS 11.2), I see: (II) Loading extension DRI2 (II) LoadModule: "nvidia" (WW) Warning, couldn't open module nvidia (II) UnloadModule: "nvidia" (EE) Failed to load module "nvidia" (module does not exist, 0) (II) LoadModule: "nouveau" (WW) Warning, couldn't open module nouveau (II) UnloadModule: "nouveau" (EE) Failed to load module "nouveau" (module does not exist, 0) (II) LoadModule: "nv" (II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules//drivers/nv_drv.so (II) Module nv: vendor="X.Org Foundation" compiled for 1.6.5, module version = 2.1.14 Module class: X.Org Video Driver ABI class: X.Org Video Driver, version 5.0 Thus, the order of preference for the X org people is: 1) privative nvidia driver 2) open nouveau driver 3) open nv driver. Why, if to them the nouveau driver takes preference to nv, was not included in the distro? Something wrong with that driver? (another question: is there a known method to switch driver? There is no more xorg.conf file) - -- Cheers, Carlos E. Just create one and keep it limited to the stuff you want to set up, the rest will still be autosetup -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Yes, I just did that. Appears to work. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. R. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2.0.9 (GNU/Linux) iEYEARECAAYFAksSbBkACgkQtTMYHG2NR9XcQgCcCM+w4Gae+Vv78HXnpXxbWb4t 9MMAn09o/veThipIPHSB4VqB6PU0zGeH =8JwK -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

It's also in X11:Drivers:Video/xorg-x11-driver-video-nouveau but no longer builds against 11.1/11.2. Due to lack of ressources Novell employees couldn't look into that yet. Patches/submitrequests are welcome though.

But why? Is it bad, wrong, too experimental? What?
We can't support it. Due to nouveau driver knowledge and lack of ressources.
Thus, the order of preference for the X org people is:
1) privative nvidia driver 2) open nouveau driver 3) open nv driver.
Why, if to them the nouveau driver takes preference to nv, was not included in the distro?
What's wrong with that logic? Give the shipped driver the lowest priority, so other manually installed 3rd party drivers are preferred. I believe this is what the user expects. The order still makes sense to me.
Something wrong with that driver?
See above. Best regards, Stefan Public Key available ------------------------------------------------------ Stefan Dirsch (Res. & Dev.) Ah... well, ok. Pity, I suppose... another abandoned project.

Ok, seen from that side, it sounds reasonable. Thank you for the clarification, I appreciate it. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. Theoretically, yes. Unfortunately, it's not the way probing is implemented in the Xserver. It's also more difficult to get it right if loading and probing the other way round.
