[opensuse-factory] 11.2 RC2 more updated than factory??????
Hello, I am a newbie in OpenSuse, I decided to use Factory (I have used Debian sid and Arch), and if I screw the system at any time, I will install the stable version of OpenSuse :-) I thought that Factory had the newest software, with the risk of less stability. But I see that the factory repository has the version 3.5.3 of Firefox, whereas the factory-snapshot repository (11.2 RC2) has version 3.5.4. How can a *snapshot* have a newer version??? Also, I would like to ask whether factory actually has the newest versions compared to other OpenSuse's repos, or not. Thank you very much in advance. if you want the latest version available that's reasonably stable, to use for your work environment, i'd suggest to use openSUSE 11.2. that's pretty stable, due to be released in 10 days or so. after that factory is going to become very bumpy for a while, since that's where new ideas for the next release are being put together and tried out. the closer it comes to the next release the stabler factory gets, but during the beginning of a new cycle i wouldn't recommend using factory, thinking you'll get the latest software in a workable environment. once you got a stable system you can add repositories from the oS build service, where you find versions programs that aren't included in the standard repo.s. -- phani. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

That is because 11.2 is branched off from factory since RC1 or 2. The last works will be done in the branched off openSUSE:11.2 project. <snap>
Thank you very much in advance.

Factory is more a procesess then a distribution version. This means that unless you are using it to test factory (and thus new openSUSE versions) you WILL run into situations where your system WILL break down completely.
I thought that Factory had the newest software, with the risk of less stability.
Less stability is not a risk, it is a given. At least for Factory. And thus is it not adviced to use it on any operational machine.
But I see that the factory repository has the version 3.5.3 of Firefox, whereas the factory-snapshot repository (11.2 RC2) has version 3.5.4. How can a *snapshot* have a newer version???
All work is now focussed on getting 11.2 out, so factory will lag behind.
Also, I would like to ask whether factory actually has the newest versions compared to other OpenSuse's repos, or not.
In general, yes. In fact it is so new that often things won't work. It is the develpment distribution that will change all the time and is highly instable.

You should be on the mailinglist and thus get the messagers. If not, then Factory might not be for you. houghi -- How do you ask a man to be the last man to die in Iraq? Which really is a shame - the stuff in 11.2 is already boring old crap, which is totally uninteresting for me as a developer and if FACTORY is even older, that's ugly as hell. have fun, sei"what? bluez-4.56? that's almost one month old!"fe -- Stefan Seyfried "Any ideas, John?" Yeah, bluez is obviously not made to be used in distributions. Greetings, Stephan -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org
