[opensuse-factory] Build kernel with CONFIG_DRM_VMWGFX=m
Hi, the vmwgfx driver is becoming ready for testing ; this vmware written video driver is targeting virtualised system running on a vmware virtualisation tool. With the right Mesa gallium component, it enables 3D acceleration on virtualised guest, using host hardware (from windows or linux system). Is it possible to enable the kernel module for VMWGFX to be built ? It might help testing gnome-shell (with mutter ux) safely inside a vmware box. Safety is relative ;-) If I understand this article from Fefe http://blog.fefe.de/?ts=b32cb04e (german) right, giving a VMware guest access to the host graphics hardware could be exploited by executing evil shader code, which would give full write access to the RAM :-( I'm not an expert in this area and don't know if the vmgfx driver is affected by this - but it should be checked by someone who understands the issue ;-) Regards, Christian Boltz -- Multitasking - one computer keeps several users/admins busy. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

I'd like to hear from someone from VMWare before we do this. In the past, they've specifically asked us *not* to enable the driver in favor of using their own. These requests were explicitly for both SLE* and openSUSE. -Jeff -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org
In fact there was apparently requests from vmware to reenable the driver in Ubuntu : https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/698009 That's what is motivating my initial request to this thread. Le 11/07/2011 05:30, Jeff Mahoney a écrit :
