[opensuse-factory] Re: [opensuse] Enhancement #399239 - feedback
Please read all the bug comments / clarifications :) this enhancement request is not about "out of disk space" alert; it is about reporting the total of bytes your going to install / remove. Now that total bytes is showed when the installation step is already started (really when starting to download the packages). Other package management tools show the disk variation: SMART and Synaptics, if I'm not wrong... On 6/23/08, Michael Mientus <michael.mientus@gmail.com> wrote:

Mike Yast used to show % disk space usage at the bottom left of the window but somewhere along the way it was left out and nobody noticed until now. Regards Dave P

Also zypper, in textual mode...

Yes, but the _disk usage variation_ is very difficuly to note. The scope of the enhancement is to have a way to know this variation in an explicit and immediate way. The idea is to pop up a summary window with all informations (disk usage variation, download size, overall disk usage) using a new menu item. So this information is prompted on demand. Other proposal (adding a button, automatically activate the pop up on accept of installation summary filter choice) are essentially discharged. For the ncurses-gui, there is a proposal and I hope it will be adopted. Regards, Andrea Maybe at the installation summary screen the unused bottom left section could be used to display explicit before and after disk usage. Regards Dave P

Yes, it could be used. This section contains the overall disk usage table and as reported into the enhancement report (last but one citation of https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=399239#c16), one idea is to add a specific column to such table. The "problem" is that currently the main community opinion is to hide such table, in fact it is currently hidden by default. I've reopened the enhancement request and hopefully people who want this feature will vote for it otherwise it may just get closed again. I'm sure it can't be difficult to display disk usage prior to accepting installation. Dave, I think just telling that there will be xxx MB more space used (as zypper does) is probably easy... but in fact the information is rather useless, if you don't have all your system on one partition. What, if you have /usr split out, /var, /etc, var/tmp, /usr/share.. name it... everything CAN be separated.. just with the metadata you have no idea how much you're going to install on any of your partitions. Without this knowlefge, the information on how much space anything needs, get's really pretty useless.... Yast used to display a per partition usage since I first used suse 7.3. I didn't like the 10.3 graph idea but it still displayed per partition usage, even including ntfs partitions which I thought was pretty useless. There is enough space bottom left of the installation summary window in yast2 qt and ncurses to display quite a lot of info. I used to split /usr and /opt from / once but never got any real balance and ended up using more space. The only possible reason I could think of would be spreading them across disks. You are right though the info is useless in that case but a user who is worried about disk space would likely not split usr from /. Hi FYI I submitted a patch to the yast-devel mailing list. It will add a string to the tooltip showed when mouse over the "free" column, in the disk usage widget, for QT GUI. The string is " - Installing xxx MB" or " - Removing -xxx MB", per-mount point. That patch uses the same information handled by the bar and percentage; currently the detailed diskusage (per directory) is only supported for the susetags format (i.e. the install repositories). On the zypp-devel mailing list pointed out that some work on SVN is going to support also diskusage for XML repositories (e.g. the update repo and all buildservice repos are of that type). If I'm uninstalling 15 packages, how do I know ho much space I'm going to free? Do I have to write in the paper the space before marking the packages to be removed, then after marking them for removal, finally make a diff?? :) On 6/23/08, Dave Plater <davejplater@gmail.com> wrote:

If we can work out exactly how we would like disk space to be freed or used, to be displayed, we can add to the enhancement request and stand more chance of getting it implemented.
