[opensuse-factory] Plasma or windowmanager don't work anymore => white screen :-(
Hi, have someone else have the same problem? After the last zypper up - the windowmanger seems to be have some errors Tho the plasmadesktop start anymore - only some windows of the first desktop are available - no menue nothing. After reboot - the screen is white - without any loginwindow or something else. Only if I move the mouse - the black curser will be available and moveable. Only a switch to the console terminal works. Regards Ulf -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

This has been reported multiple times in the mailing list: ensure you are fully up to date, remove ~/.cache and /var/lib/sddm/.cache, then everything will start working.

And, as reported as often: *Do no use 'zypper up'*, but 'zypper dup' as per documentation. -- Gertjan Lettink, a.k.a. None of that works. I have all updates applied -- yes, "zypper dup"... I don't even get the white screen I just get a black screen with a cursor arrow. The boot process ends at setting up the locale. What is quite strange is that many of the boot messages are getting output in duplicate. Doing the broken login screen does nothing as well nor does systemctl restart display-manager. I've tried every hint in this and the last thread -- still have to roll back to 20171228 release.

For possible completeness--I ran into the Mesa glitch also, I think, and the recommended fix worked, but there were differences. I have an AMD E450 with graphics, whereas every other mention I saw was to Intel graphics. My first few attempts brought up a desktop, but plasmashell disappeared after a few seconds with a coredump. Later on, sddm was core dumping after it came up. I think I worked out that wouldn't always do so right away, but always would I exercised it by, for example, selecting a particular desktop. I finally selected IceWM and it was stable. Plasmashell has always been slow to come up, with the system spending some idle time (possibly waiting for a systemd start job), and then some application windows opening first. The bug first hit when I for the first time selected Wayland--I thought that was the cause. I still haven't tried Wayland--I guess I'll do that the next time I reboot. -- Tom Hardy <rhardy702@gmail.com> -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Just for the record, I experienced the Mesa issue also with one AMD RX460 GPU but clearing the caches fix worked for me. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

I encountered this symptom ~2 weeks ago on a machine with 15.0, the solution was to install Mesa-dri (and possibly also Mesa-dri-32bit) package which was missing. re the "white login screen" is caused by incorrect writes to ~/.cache/qtshadercache and /var/lib/sddm/.cache rm -rf ~/.cache/qtshadercache /var/lib/sddm/.cache -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net Photos: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/piwigo paka @ IRCnet freenode -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Just for the records: Did a zypper dup a minute ago, and everything works as expected. No issues here with Intel Graphics Best, Axel -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org
