[opensuse-factory] New package "plasma5-applet-suse-prime" -> Factory
Greetings y'all. Newbies to Linux tend to think it's cumbersome and requires terminal usage. While users with certain hardware setups can often avoid the terminal, this is not the case for users of SUSE Prime with Nvidia Optimus hardware if they desire switching between the dedicated Nvidia and integrated Intel CPU. This applet for KDE Plasma 5 allows you to see what card is active and to switch between them without touching a terminal. https://build.opensuse.org/package/show/KDE:Extra/plasma5-applet-suse-prime https://github.com/Appadeia/plasma5-applet-suse-prime

hi Carson, thanks for this package. I have 3 questions: 1. Should I remove bumblebee packages before I try suse-prime? 2. Can suse-prime disable nvidia card to obtain better power consumption on battery? 3. Do I need nvidia driver to use suse-prime to disable nvidia card? thanks, m. No. suse-prime script configures a "reverse prime" mode, where everything on your screen is rendered on nvidia card and result is displayed by intel.
- does it work with 32bit binares that need the nvidia card?
If you install 32bit drivers, then it works.
- does it work with steam and steam games?
Yes.
- can I use this to seamlessly use the nvidia card for single applications / games while continue to run the desktop itself on the intel card the way I can with bumblebee / optirun / primusrun? No.
- does it work with 32bit binares that need the nvidia card? 32-bit apps are working fine.
- does it work with steam and steam games? Yes. Actually even better than bumblebee. Performance improvement for some cases, while I'm haven't noticed any serious difference, other people noted big difference in performance. The main improvement for me: Vulkan — bumblebee doesn't work with Vulkan and its development stopped several years ago, so it would happen [1]. There is some project [2] to support Vulkan in bumblebee way, but it seems it stuck with coping overhead.

1. Should I remove bumblebee packages before I try suse-prime? No, but: 1.1. You should remove nvidia-bumblebee and install official drivers [1][2]. 1.2. Bumblebee itself and primusrun might be installed, but they wouldn't work (as they need special nvidia-bumblebee installation).
2. Can suse-prime disable nvidia card to obtain better power consumption on battery? It work with bbswitch/bbswitch-kmp to disable/enable NVidia card. I'm currently working in-house on other approach to power off/on NVidia card, which doesn't involve bbswitch, but it still needs some personal control, so not wide-ready yet.
3. Do I need nvidia driver to use suse-prime to disable nvidia card? Haven't checked but I don't see any need of nvidia driver as modules are blacklisted and not used while nvidia is disabled.

No. Disabling bumblebee daemon should be enough.
2. Can suse-prime disable nvidia card to obtain better power consumption on battery?
Probably yes. Keep in mind that to change between nvidia and integrated card you need to logout to restart Xorg.
3. Do I need nvidia driver to use suse-prime to disable nvidia card?
That's an odd question. As far as I know you don't need any nvidia driver to disable nvidia card. That's handled by bbswitch.
