[opensuse-factory] Too much Gnome for KDE
Why does gnome-control-center, needed only because certain apps are built only using gtk but never to be used here except outside of Gnome, dep to nautilus, metacity & nautilus-tracker, even with zypper's -d option? Why do I need ~17 gnome packages just to run Epiphany? -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Proverbs 16:21 (New Living Translation) Team OS/2 ** Reg. Which app depends on gnome-control-center? Since it's a core part of GNOME, I don't think it's unreasonable for it to bring some other parts of GNOME with it... (although, looking at it, I'm a bit unsure why it requires nautilus)

Which ones? Likely libraries? Vincent -- Les gens heureux ne sont pas pressés. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Probably. It's important to remember that the *number* of packages isn't as important as it might have been years ago. A lot of work has gone into making packages more granular specifically so that issues like that one you're experiencing don't have as big of an impact. It will pull in the necessary libraries (and potentially, utilities as well) but not the entire world like it used to. - -Jeff - -- Jeff Mahoney SUSE Labs -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2.0.15 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with SUSE - http://enigmail.mozdev.org/ iEYEARECAAYFAkxcFgsACgkQLPWxlyuTD7JmfwCgkxcLGRQckqp3rHhbXvn2axWz Gp8AoIsbqdF/UlqH9Cx0EgFpVGdTM/Mz =NtsI -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

There is a lot of room on improving package dependencies (either the excess or lack of them), post your findings in bugzilla. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Agreed. This is something I've contended with since I started using Linux. Too many packages have completely unnessessary dependings on other hardware or software. This wastes bandwidth because all these packages require updates. I shouldn't have to install libraries to support a Palm Pilot to use a PIM unless I have one. Or SCSI, Firewire, USB, etc. If you have older machines that don't have this hardware, why should you install support for them(well MAYBE USB. But not firewire). If your system detects that you've installed new hardware, then either have the nessessary files on the drive to be installed OR connect and get them. It's completely likely you are going to have your computer connected to the internet most of the time now anyways...... -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

You should not assume that as a given. Me, I don't have Internet all the time in my laptop. Or, on some internal networks there is no access to the outside at all. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. I was off by one on dep count, but it still seems excessive. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=629396 -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." You probably want to use http://stick.gk2.sk/blog/2010/03/zypper-dependency-graph/ to better understand why each dependency is there. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org
