[opensuse-factory] Anyone wants to maintain puppet?
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi, I would like to ask if anyone is interested in maintaining this package. I find maintaining it too difficult because: 1. It's written in ruby, which I don't know at all, 2. Has security vulnerabilities often and I find it difficult to backport upstream patches to the versions we maintain, 3. I don't use it so I don't have a deep understanding of how it should work etc., 4. I became maintainer accidentally, I got it after a colleague who quit job. As a result, I'm afraid I won't be able to ensure that puppet will be in usable state in SLE 12. If someone is interested, please tell me, I can provide the list of bugs that are open now. I don't volunteer but I'm wlling to provide help.

Pot here, meet black.
2. Has security vulnerabilities often and I find it difficult to backport upstream patches to the versions we maintain,
Why do we need to support upstream patches, vs. upstream versions. E.g., on OBS, it's puppet 3.3.1. Upstream, it's 3.4.x. Why are we not able to update? puppet ain't in any SUSE distribution, so we should be able to do it. Is this a SLE[SD] thing? Why don't we simply update to the newest version, instead of back-porting patches? This packages aren't a member of any distribution after all. [To wit: As a puppet user, I'm waiting for a release of the currecnt stable version on OBS. It doesn't seem to happem.]
3. I don't use it so I don't have a deep understanding of how it should work etc.,
For those who don't know the context: Puppet is one of the major players in system configuration software. SLE[SD] might work, well, sometimes; but OpenSUSE doesn't work at all. In most Puppet modules, SUSE is ignored. All Linux work in that area concentrates on RHEL and Debian. (But then, Fedora is in the same situation.) With the upcoming importance of cloud instances, this implies that (open)SUSE will start to have problems. As I don't know how important that area is for openSUSE's strategy, I won't reflect on consequences. (Personally, I care; but I don't have lots of serious investments in it. If bad comes to worse, I'll be always able to use Slackware, as I did back in 1990, before I switched to *SUSE... ;-) Btw, Chef, the other major contender in that area, doesn't have much further support for SUSE either. Effectively, (open)SUSE is left behind in the area of automatic deployments.
4. I became maintainer accidentally, I got it after a colleague who quit job.
Doesn't it suck to be employed by SUSE? ;-) ;-) Being a CEO -- well, look at the posting time -- there are other positions that suck. Let's make the best out of it. If you can't be with the one you love, love the one you're with [CSN&Y, actually from Billy Preston].
As a result, I'm afraid I won't be able to ensure that puppet will be in usable state in SLE 12.
Since I neither use factory nor SLE[SD]; I won't apply. Nevertheless: If somebody takes over, I will be available and willing to test puppet on regular openSUSE distributions, report errors, and help to triage.
