[opensuse-factory] Please Ristretto back instead of Gimp for opening images from browser in 11.2
Hi, Ristretto is just plain, simple, scalable, simple zoomable, and for all very fast. Gimp is like opening photoshop to vieuw one picture... To vieuw a pic, you need a vieuwer, not a manipulator.. ;) (gimp takes ages to load, cluttering the screen with unnessesary windows...) I guess you all know that, and it wil be build problems or something, and it will be back soon? -- Enjoy your time around, Oddball (M9.) (Now or never...) Eye Of GNOME is the default image viewer for GNOME and there's no reason to replace it. If I remember correctly the default under KDE is Gwenview, and again it works fine (at least for me :) ). When complaining of an issue like this, please advise us on what your environment is - even if it means saying something like "please see sig for environment". Ristretto is actually an XFCE sub-project although as it is Gtk based it works seamlessly with GNOME. Why would you want a Gtk based app replace a Qt4 app in a KDE environment? That i did not know, but explains why it is not choosen now: i did not install xfce yet...! I will try what happens when i install xfce.. Well, i would like a qt4 based app, if it works fine.. Since people are claiming too often that it is a Firefox problem and it isn't in most cases: Please give exact examples with detailed files and mime-types using a public URL what can be used to reproduce. Hi Wolfgang, i will see what i can find. But i had the problem as well and i searched for ages in the KDE4 Systemsettings where GIMP was not even mentioned. But i needed to change it in the Firefox Preferences before it actually worked. it still ignores the KDE4 Settings and only follows its own. And to open a .pdf with GIMP is just a stupid default because there are much better Applications out ther (Evince for example - if i want to go to the GNOME Side of Apps) At the moment i have no URL available but i will see if i can reproduce on my Factoryinstall where i havent changed anyting yet. Yes, it's true that Firefox doesn't obey KDE settings. That doesn't mean it uses its own usually but it uses gnome-vfs which in turn uses shared-mime-info and desktop files which is a freedesktop standard, isn't it? It's also using global and user mime-types and mailcap. So it's not like Firefox wouldn't integrate into Linux. It's not integrating into KDE though. If you got an example please throw it on me. In the past quite some of the cases where Firefox offered a really strange app it was for example because of the good apps didn't have the correct mime-type in its desktop file. I'm using 11.1 but get the same result. Ok, let me explain why that happens to you (most likely). Firefox is using gnome-vfs so gnome-vfs prefers Gnome and Gtk apps by default (which makes kind of sense). And you (see below) have most likely no other Gnome/Gtk application installed which supports image/png. So yes, the behaviour is not optimal especially for KDE users. I'm wondering if it's possible to have some kind of "KDE mode" (if Gnome is not installed at all) of the gnome_defaults.conf/glib2/defaults.list mechanism which doesn't prefer Gnome and Gtk apps? I also attached a tiny executable (not harmful ;-)) built for x86-64 which gives you some idea about the gnome-vfs/share-mime-info config on your machine. Just run it and show us the output. Wolfgang

Yes, the same problem was reported in bug: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=456026 Here is my plan: - Drop SuSEconfig.glib2 as it exists just now (ugly bash script) - Write and upstream a new tool with configurable set of preferences. - Playing with XDG_* variables, force different defaults in gvfs and gnome-vfs applications in GNOME and KDE. - And finally, using one-time virtual symbol trigger feature in future versions of rpm call this script every time any desktop file is installed. As a backup solution (ugly, but less effort) would be modifying of existing SuSEconfig script and run it twice. As a temporary work-around, you can install and run nautilus, click to Properties of a particular file and configure application which you want. -- Best Regards / S pozdravem, Stanislav Brabec software developer --------------------------------------------------------------------- SUSE LINUX, s. r. o. e-mail: sbrabec@suse.cz Lihovarská 1060/12 tel: +420 284 028 966, +49 911 740538747 190 00 Praha 9 fax: +420 284 028 951 Czech Republic http://www.suse.cz/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org
