Will we be able to use the 3D effects (Xgl) with Kde? We were considering to move from kde to gnome because we wanted to use the new menu and 3D effects we saw on SLD10.0. However, if Kde will have a new menu and Xgl supported, we may not. jordi ----------------------------------------------- Jordi Massaguer Pla openTrends Solucions i Sistemes phone: +34 93 320 84 14 fax: +34 93 300 35 27 jordi.massaguer@opentrends.net --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

KDE _will_ have the Kickoff menu on 10.2.. no "if" http://en.opensuse.org/Kickoff Lot's of people have used Xgl with KDE. Whether or not it's supported is a matter of definition. http://suse.linuxin.dk/images/screenshots/xgla.jpg Xgl is not only in SLED but also in SUSE Linux 10.1 btw. And if they're usable by end of October will they be included? <flamebait>so we can maybe have eyecandy _and_ functionality at the same time, without major nuissances</flamebait>. Hi Martin, first thanks for your aswer. The new Kickoff menu is a big improvement. I had a look at the latest 10.2 alpha(apart from a few minor glitches) I know that Xgl is in SLED and SUSE Linux 10.1. (in fact I have a Suse 10.1 laptop right in front of me with XGL and KDE 3.54) But to get it to work correctly I had to switch to gdm in the displaymanager configuration file. (when I had it set to kdm(default for KDE) no X-Server would start at all ---> so no starting or logging in to KDE) And yes I tried all the other known ways of enabling it. The problem is it works great for KDE when you accept a lot of workarounds.(nothing for normal users(corporate users!) In Gnome you would only need gset-compiz and even normal users could handle that. I noticed kicker-compiz but haven't been able to try it yet. Does somebody have experience with it? Is it usable for a standard user? a Quinn is something I regulary use but it has not solved the KDE-integration for me(yet). Perhaps Beryl(fork) will change that. I'm really interested in the official plans as how to handle Xgl/Compiz on KDE. The community compiz packages have been available since the begining on openSUSE Build Service repositories. The Beryl Project packages for 10.1 and Factory would continue to be available too. However it is a great misfortune that Novell did not take full advantage of the most groundbreaking Linux Desktop breakthrough it brought to us. For such a large company it could have at least hired one developer who could have nurtured and engaged the community and let David Reveman and his team work without taking their time to communicate with all. -J _____________ cyberorg --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

My only outing was with 10.1Beta9, it was impossible to move to a particular desktop in a straightforward way, stuff was flipping every which way when the mouse pointer neared the edge of the display. Also Novell's love affair with Gnome showed through and no way is Novell or any other company ever going to get KDE users to switch to Gnome, citing Ubuntu and Kubuntu in evidence. We love some Gnome apps, I install Gnome and update it from the Update_for_10.1 repos, but unlike KDE, if you attempt to build a Gnome app that has just appeared with features that you'd like, you soon find out that if it's for 2.16, no way will it build under 2.12 -- too rigid -- and what is also strange knowing the direction Novell is trying to take the distro in, the version of Gnome with any distro is always behind, i.e. 10.1 is still at Gnome 2.12 while 10.2 Alpha4 is at 2.16-sorta.
However it is a great misfortune that Novell did not take full advantage of the most groundbreaking Linux Desktop breakthrough it brought to us.

Mandriva seems to have better understood the significance of this than has Novell. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce ...
