[opensuse-factory] 12.1m5 - FIBMAP and modem-manager ?
I've just installed 12.1M5 on a plain HP Compaq office machine - after logging in (KDE), and swapping to virtual console 1, I see a slew (maybe 50) of message "FIBMAP: Invalid argument". Second, a little later I see a pile of messages from "modem-manager" about plugins being loaded. I tried "man modem-manager", but found no man-page - there are no modems on this box, what's the modem-manager thingie up to? -- Per Jessen, Zürich (25.5°C) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

This is caused by the package preload, you can safely remove it "zypper rm preload".

Seen them too, but you can safely ignore them. In case your network is not working properly, search for "''" in /etc/sysconfig/SuSEfirewall2 and remove ''. In case your wireless is not working and you see a message about not being able to set the power saving feature, change WIRELESS_POWER = "no" to WIRELESS_POWER = "none" in /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-wlan0 In case you get a black screen after your first boot, remove the package with the word nouveau in its name. -- fr.gr. I'm just testing, so I don't care much about the messages, but surely they should not be happening at all?

My network is working just fine. :-)

This box has only plain copper GigE, no wireless etc. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (19.9°C) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

This is what NetworkManager uses for the communication with modems, to connect to 3G networks, for instance. Vincent -- Les gens heureux ne sont pas pressés. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Yes, I think I saw that when I googled a little later. The next question is - I don't use networkmanager, nor do I have any modems installed, should modem-manager really have been installed and started? -- Per Jessen, Zürich (19.9°C) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Yes. Because modem-manager is the piece of software that detects your modems (this is why it is loading the modules). For most users it would be hard to know they should install the ModemManager package, and it might be impossible if they cannot use their modem without it :-) And so NetworkManager and ModemManager are in the default selection. If you don't use them, you can just uninstall them. What makes me wonder is: why is modem-manager started if you use ifup and not NetworkManager, but that question, along with why the messages are on console and not in syslog is probably best solved in the bugreport you certainly have already filed. -- Stefan Seyfried "Dispatch war rocket Ajax to bring back his body!" -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Thanks, good explanation.

Yup.

Not quite yet, but it's coming :-) This modem-manager is new to me, so I wasn't sure whether I was really seeing a bug or just expected behaviour. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (23.2°C) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org
