[opensuse-factory] No Activities, was: KDE Virtual desktops all identical
* Stefan Bruens <stefan.bruens@rwth-aachen.de> [07-30-15 23:00]: [...]
Thats kind of usage is exactly what activities are meant for.
Virtual desktops are orthogonal to activies, although virtual desktops have been abused for this kind of usage.
Virtual desktops provide exactly one thing, more space, nothing else.
There is one thing current activities lack, an advanced/configurable switcher/overview, but thats it.
I have a thread in opensuse-kde discussing the lack of activities or any method of creating an activity on my Tw systems, also another server on 13.1. I have the activities widget but nothing happens when trying to activitate it. The "Desktop" menu does not provide for "creating" an activity. And I have three other Tw systems which also have no provision for "creating" an activity. wtf? Any help appreciated. As mentioned on the KD mailinglist, for KDE4 (i.e. on 13.1) you need to have "kactivities4" installed. This was only recommended in the past, so you might not have it if you disabled/prevented the installation of recommended packages for some reason.
I have the activities widget but nothing happens when trying to activitate it.
Might be a graphics driver problem. Try with compositing turned off (systemsettings5->Display and Monitor->Compositor). Does this command list any activities? Your activitymanager might not be reachable for some reason... qdbus org.kde.ActivityManager /ActivityManager/Activities ListActivities If that works, you should also be able to create an activity via this: qdbus org.kde.ActivityManager /ActivityManager/Activities AddActivity name_of_my_new_activity
The "Desktop" menu does not provide for "creating" an activity.
The "Desktop" menu should provide an entry to show the "Activity Manager" which will let you create activities. Kind Regards, Wolfgang -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

It should show all activities similar to how the task manager shows windows. So does this not show anything? And you should be able to switch by just clicking on one, exactly like you would switch to a different application/window in the task manager. ps2: another thought, This box began service 2011 March with 11.1 or 11.2 (iirc) and moved to Tw when Greg KH started it and has been constantly updated/upgraded via the process current at that time to 20150802. I think this might be a possible reason for your problem, yes. The org.kde.activities QML module is contained in the package kactivities5- imports. So install that package if it is not installed, or reinstall it ("zypper in -f kactivities5-import", or "Update Unconditionally" in YaST) if it is already installed. Apparently this is only recommended, at least I can uninstall it here in 13.2 without rpm complaining. If it is indeed the reason for your problem, the package dependencies should probably be changed.

I don't see how. This just invokes the keyboard shortcut to open the activities manager. As it doesn't work when you click on it or press the keyboard shortcut, this qdbus command won't work either. That did it :). Wasn't sure. After installing kactivities5-imports, added "Activities Bar" to task bar and it still didn't respond to left-mouse clicks. So figured might need to restart kde, and logged out of the current desktop. But that didn't drop me to a login screen as normally happens, it put me into one of the two activities I have, Deskktop, and Graphics and I was able to switch back and forth using the "Activites Bar", which except for size is as handy as the "Pager" if one can assign "Key Shortcuts". Indeed it did, but the widget "Show Activity Manager" does not show anything.
So the activity manager itself is working at least.
The "Desktop" menu does not provide for "creating" an activity.
The "Desktop" menu should provide an entry to show the "Activity Manager" which will let you create activities.
"should" but does not :(
What does that mean? You don't have that entry, or it doesn't open the Activity Manager?
I created a "new" user and went to ttyX, logged in as "new" user:
startx -- :1
When running "startx", the user might not have sufficient permissions to directly access the graphics card (i.e. direct rendering), which might cause crashes even. So login via a display manager, or at least add the user to the "video" group.
Doesn't open the Activity Manager, on any of my desktops.
Added "new" user to video group and now the splash screen clears but the display is quite garbled, mostly very large text and plasma5 crash notices still appear but the distortion renders them unusable. tks -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Ok. But switching with " qdbus org.kde.ActivityManager /ActivityManager/Activities SetCurrentActivity 7f9d96bc-4050-4d83-9c54-3727ac0d871b" (or similar) works I suppose? And, as I asked in my other mail, does the "Add Widgets" dialog work? I think that uses the same mechanisms to open.

Hm, there might be other permission problems as well. Can you try using a display manager as a test? Kind Regards, Wolfgang -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

No, configure is available but left-mouse gives nothing.

Ah, maybe I understand. Logged out of desktop and restarted graphical display. Logged in as new user. Display looked wrong, so logged out. Reinstalled nvidia driver Logged in as new user and display is correct. Activities still won't display from desktop drop-down menu. Added "activities" widget, no action on left-mouse click. Still able to configure. tks, -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

You mistakenly left out the "SetCurrentActivity". qdbus org.kde.ActivityManager /ActivityManager/Activities SetCurrentActivity 7f9d96bc-4050-4d83-9c54-3727ac0d871b

No, configure is available but left-mouse gives nothing.
What "configure" is available? I meant right-click on the desktop and choose "Add Widget...". Does the widget chooser appear or not?
Can you try using a display manager as a test?

"init 5" or "systemctl start display-manager". Kind Regards, Wolfgang -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Tks, got my regular desktop back.
And, as I asked in my other mail, does the "Add Widgets" dialog work? I think that uses the same mechanisms to open.
No, configure is available but left-mouse gives nothing.
What "configure" is available?
I can add widgets. I added the "activities" widget, but it provides no action, nothing on lef-click.

yes,
Can you try using a display manager as a test?

"init 5" or "systemctl start display-manager".
Yes, I did this with "new" user, but still nothing from activities widget or menu. tks, -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org
