Introducing Mozilla Firefox ESR as a new package "firefox-esr"
Hi there, we like to introduce a new package "firefox-esr" to be added to openSUSE Factory/Tumbleweed. It is a regularly taken version of the normal MozillaFirefox web browser, but does not follow the monthly development process. It is maintained with mostly security fixes over a period of approximately 12 months, after which the next version will be taken. Leap users already know this package since MozillaFirefox in Leap is the ESR version. The package lives in Wolfgang Rosenauer's "mozilla" project in OBS and is developed at "mozilla:Factory". It is a combined team effort from Wolfgang Rosenauer, Martin Sirringhaus and myself. The program itself is called "firefox-esr" which, when started for the first time, will create a new profile if you are a "firefox" user already. Settings and/or bookmarks will not be sync'ed between the two versions - users have to deal with this on their own. We hope you'll appreciate the new package! Cheers. l8er manfred

Thank you and Wolfgang for all your work around Firefox! I appreciate what you do. Best greetings, Carsten -- Netscape is not a newsreader, and probably never shall be. -- Tom Christiansen
This sounds like an exact match for Leap respectively SLES. On Mon, Dec 9, 2024 at 7:59 PM Carsten Ziepke <kieltux@gmail.com> wrote:

well, Leap/SLE already have this ESR version, it is only called MozillaFirefox there ;-) We spent some effort to make both versions co-exist. If Leap/SLE would accept a package rename from MozillaFirefox to firefox-esr, we could avoid some work and potentially some confusion ;-) Cheers. l8er manfred

Firefox ESR is the flavour which is shipping with Leap (and SLES) for ages already. That Manfred is driving to bring it to Tumbleweed is to help users who still either want to run ESR even on Tumbleweed or need ESR additionally for whatever purpose (compat testing or whatever special sites). We already have everything in the mozilla repo for a long time so this is just a formal step to make it available via the standard Tumbleweed repository. Wolfgang
