[opensuse-factory] W-Fi in 13.2 (ie Factory)
I have counted up to 10 several times and now feel I am more or less composed enough to post this message concerning on how to set-up wi-fi in 13.2. How the h*** is it done?! For 13.1 I looked at the YouTube video on how to do this and had it working within 30 seconds. But in 13.2 I have now wasted an hour or so trying to figure out the mess which is 'networking'. And what the h*** is "wicked"?! Is there some documentation on how to get wi-fi working in 13.2, please, or at least a hint on what to do to get my laptop's wi-fi configured? I've tried using "wicked" with identical settings to what worked with "ifup" but have had no success. I've also tried as many variations as I could think of but still no joy. Thanks for the response. I cannot get the NetworkManager working so I have to ask you - as I will also ask Neil: did you 'upgrade' to 13.2 Factory FROM a working copy of 13.1 or did you install 13.2 as a CLEAN, FRESH installation from, say, the ISO disc? See my reply to Neil. There is a YouTube video on how to get wi-fi under NM working for 13.1. For 13.2 it is basically the same but one has to take into account that KDE 4.13.3 has caused some changes in the panel (the applet for NM seems to have disappeared - at least here it has :-) ) and that the Network Settings has been modified but still do the same job. No thanks, I had no probs with if[up,down, config] and have seen none with six factory systems using wicked except that an update (dup) last night stopped network connection, but only a network restart was required. Would be a problem for remote, mine are all local, at least enough local. If that's the 30-minute film then that's not what I want. I need a simple document that explains how to set up WICD. I assume that someone has updated the SDB document (https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Wicd) for 13.2 but, of course, has not yet made it generally available to the public. I've tried using the above documentation but many parts such as using "ifup" for example and also the commands near the bottom of the "usage" paragraph. Needless to say, I still couldn't get WICD to work after using this documentation. It's possible that I missed the references in the YaST help panels for 13.2 on how to proceed with setting this up but that's the first place where such documentation should be. Come to that, by selecting "wicked" in the YaST setup I would have expected the main settings to be correctly set automatically. -- Graham Davis, Bracknell, Berks. openSUSE 13.1 (64-bit); KDE 4.13.3; AMD Phenom II X2 550 Processor; Kernel: 3.11.10; Video: nVidia GeForce 210 (using nVidia driver); Sound: ATI SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA); Wireless: BCM4306 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

I cannot get the NetworkManager working so I have to ask you - as I will also ask Neil: did you 'upgrade' to 13.2 Factory FROM a working copy of 13.1 or did you install 13.2 as a CLEAN, FRESH installation from, say, the ISO disc?

Thanks again for replying, Graham. Since posting the above I have had a change of fortunes in both 13.1 and 13.2 Factory :-) . A somewhat obtuse statement but let me explain by first talking about 13.1 and then about 13.2. I have both 13.1 and 13.2 installed on the laptop. I got Network Manager working on 13.1 as I mentioned already in another earlier post. But today I noticed that I had forgotten to upgrade KDE to 4.13.3 so I did the upgrade. This resulted in the wi-fi going belly up :-( . Working one moment with KDE 4.11.x but not working as soon as 4.13.3 was installed. So I went looking. What I found is that the applet for wi-fi in the (bottom) panel disappeared and, more importantly, for some reason the Network setting in YaST got screwed up and the Change Host via DHCP got itself deselected. After ticking this box the w-fi started to work again. And just on this point- when I boot up the laptop in 13.1 the wi-fi becomes active almost instantly, whereas in 13.2......... see below. Now re 13.2 Factory. Once again, the problem here lay with the Change Host via DHCP being unselected. Ticking this box got wi-fi working. However, on rebooting 13.2 the wi-fi was NOT working :-( . After some "fooling around" I had it working again mostly by blind luck I think because, as I said, the applet which was in 13.1 is not in 13.2 but by pressing something or another a menu similar to what is found in 13.1 appeared and I was able to type in (hex) password and this appears to have been saved somewhere because on the next reboot wi-fi was working ..... BUT, but it takes at least 1 minute+ to become active, ie actually find the router/modem, whereas in 13.1 this process is almost instantaneous. Don't know the reason for this delay but the good news is that wi-fi finally gets going :-) . * * * There is one more thing re above which caused me a bit of headache - but I now do not remember if it was in 13.1 or 13.2 Factory :-( . At some point after a reboot I couldn't get wi-fi to connect even though it was doing so a few minutes earlier, before the reboot, so I kept going into YaST to check the settings there. But every time I ran YaST I would get the message: WARNING! Network currently handled by Network Manager or completely disabled. YaST is unable to configure some options. Now, I thought to myself, what the h*** is the good of you, YaST, if you cannot configure the Network Manager?! Anyway, this is where I poked around to find where NM could be "activated" since the NM applet had disappeared. I did find the place - cannot remember where now :-( but I will find it if I have to - and what I found was that WEP password somehow dropped a character and this caused the WARNING! msg in YaST. As soon as I corrected the WEP password wi-fi became "activated". For four of those, it was a clean install. Two of those clean installs were in June (or maybe late may) and updated ("zypper dup") since. The third clean install was this month (maybe 20140807). The fourth clean install was two days ago on my laptop (using an external drive for the install). My 5th factory system was installed (clean install) as 13.2M0, back in March, and updated yesterday to current factory. I did have networking problems with that back in March and again yesterday (probably a residue of the March problems). But all is now working. Networking has mostly been fine on all of them. I think they currently all use "wicked", but I have switched between that and NetworkManager, without problem. I always uncheck "Change Host via DHCP". And doing that has never caused problems. For all of those systems, I did start with a clean $HOME/.kde4 . I always do that when beta testing. So, although I usually retain my old home partition, I start with fresh desktop settings files. But I think that should only be relevant for NetworkManager, and not for "wicked". I perhaps overstated slightly, in saying that I have no networking problems. I do have a problem on one system, and I have seen that on another. What happens, is that when networking starts, I have no IPv6 access to the Internet. I have only a link-local IPv6 address. If I wait -- perhaps 30 minutes -- the IPv6 addresses show up. I'm seeing that with "wicked". However, on my first install on my laptop (and WiFi), I saw that both with NetworkManager and "wicked". After a re-install, I am not seeing that. Original install on the laptop was from the KDE live iso. The reinstall used the DVD installer. I doubt that is the difference, but I could be wrong. The original install used straight partitioning. The reinstall used an encrypted LVM. I'm guessing that's the difference. The IPv6 problem is likely a timing issue, and the use of an encrypted LVM changes the timing of system startup a little because it is limited by the kernel modules that are in the initrd until the crypto key is provided. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

As best I can tell, "wicked" is a daemon that supervises the network service. It seems to replace "ifup", but uses the "ifup" settings files. I switched my laptop to "wicked" this morning, to see if there were problems. Configuring the WiFi network was a breeze. The only problem was that it didn't work. In Yast Network Settings, I clicked "Edit" for the WiFi device. Then I clicked the "General" tab. I switched "Activate Device" from "boot time" (the default) to "on cable connect". Then the "Next" and whatever buttons in Yast, and I had network. I gave a bit more detail in this forum thread: "https://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php/500337-Wicked-really-is-well-name..." As I mention, getting the Network Manager working for wi-fi under 13.1 took less than 30 seconds - which is what happened yesterday while I had the "virgin" 13.1 installed (on the laptop). However, when I upgraded KDE to 4.13.3 wi-fi went belly up. But I finally got it going.
In Yast Network Settings, I clicked "Edit" for the WiFi device. Then I clicked the "General" tab. I switched "Activate Device" from "boot time" (the default) to "on cable connect". Then the "Next" and whatever buttons in Yast, and I had network.
I was going to ask you- did you install 13.2 from the DVD ISO or did you upgrade 13.1 using Factory? What you are showing above I cannot see in Network Settings in YaST but I can see "Network Setup Settings" in Network Settings and the choices here are- * NetworkManager Service * Wicked * Network Services Disabled I seem to remember that the choice of settings you mention above are in 13.1 and KDE 4.11.x but these changed -- but I may be wrong. In any case, are you sure that you switched from "boot time" to "on cable connect" because I thought that I saw that '"cable connect" was the default, and I switched it to "boot time" to get wi-fi working........ This comment is specifically aimed at 13.1, repeat 13.1, and not 13.2. There is a YouTube video which I followed and which had my wi-fi working in under 30 seconds. The video is called "openSUSE 13.1_WIFI for newbies".
I gave a bit more detail in this forum thread: "https://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php/500337-Wicked-really-is-well-name..."
With Network Manager so easy to configure (once you have worked it all out that is! :-) ) I'll stick with it and not go tippy-toeing thru another minefield :-) .

For 13.1 I looked at the YouTube video on how to do this and had it working within 30 seconds. But in 13.2 I have now wasted an hour or so trying to figure out the mess which is 'networking'. And what the h*** is "wicked"?! As best I can tell, "wicked" is a daemon that supervises the network service. It seems to replace "ifup", but uses the "ifup" settings files.
I switched my laptop to "wicked" this morning, to see if there were problems.
Thanks for the response, Neil.

For 13.1 I run this script. #!/bin/bash # # This script enables the NetworkManager systemctl stop network.service systemctl --force enable NetworkManager.service systemctl start network.service - -- Cheers!
