On both systems I get video error codes suggesting lack of bandwith, plausible at ~5Mbps/WiFi, unlikely at 78Mbps/wired. Other proprietary devices are quite happy, even at the meagre ADSL speeds over WiFi.

I've also tried setting the 'Always allowed to run' checkbox in chrome://plugins for Widevine Content Decryption Module. Has anyone had success with getting licensed content to play?
