[opensuse-factory] Draft Milestone 7 Release
Hi, michl and myself are currently working on the M7 release. Below is a copy & paste of the current text. I'm off for lunch now and wanted to get your feedback. Please send your comments on opensuse-marketing or join michl and myself on freenode IRC channel #opensuse-marketing. Andreas openSUSE 11.3 Milestone 7: Preparing for RC Phase Milestone 7, a snapshot of the Factory “work in progress” build, leading up to openSUSE 11.3 release in July, is now available for download. M7 is the second release of the “Stablizing Freeze” and last milestone, the next release will be RC1 on June 17th. openSUSE 11.3 Progress Compared to M6, this milestone brings many bug fixes, an update to Linux kernel 2.6.34 and the integration of translations and new artwork. LXDE has been newly integrated and is part of the DVD media. * On demand package installation in KDE, for e.g. debug info packages and missing modules. * Imagewriter tool to copy ISO images to an USB stick * Updated distribution with new upstream packages Testing! Testing! Testing! As this is a milestone and not a final release, 11.3 M7 does contain bugs both known and unknown, but should not stand between courageous contributors and release testing. The following annoyances have already been reported: * Firefox crashes at start Bug #608087 – workaround: update gtk2 to the new version from the GNOME factory repo * The x86_64 NET Install CD had a garbled screen for an NVidia GeForce Go 7150M graphics adapter. The workaround is to add “brokenmodules=nouveau” to the Boot Options line. * LXDM always start default session Bug #607868 Please see http://en.opensuse.org/Bugs:Most_Annoying_Bugs_11.3_dev#openSUSE_11.3_Milest... for the current list. That one I do not understand. AFAIK we don't have any KMS capable DRM driver in initrd of installation CD. And for installation we still use the fbdev X driver. Hence this doesn't make sense to me. I don't know why it happens, but I had the problem and posted that comment to the most annoying bug line. I tried every option under F3 with no success. Even the text install was broken until I listed nouveau as broken. Spider Oak provides 2GB of free Cloud storage. You can share files in that storage area with others.. or restrict it to your own private backup/storage. It's actually a really nice app/service... works very well (I've been using it for a while in 11.2)... and integrates into your desktop (eg systray in KDE4) very nicely. They already provide a package for openSUSE in their download area. Now it needs to go into Factory. Henne will take care of that.

I can't say why SpiderOak was selected here, but I can tell you why I picked it over DropBox for my 11.2 install.... DropBox has a requirement for Nautilus (according to the website)... I don't use Gnome, I use KDE4... and SpiderOak is Desktop Environment agnostic.... ie no hard requirements on Dolphin, Nautilus or other DE specific things. So... I'm guessing here... for a more broad coverage of the various desktops, SpiderOak was a better fit? Main reason for choosing SpiderOak ist that major parts of it are open source already and during our conversation they stated they will open source the whole thing in the near future. From a feature perspective we don't see much difference. And by the way, I never received a reply from DropBox but from SpiderOak ;-)

Well we could always stick with Goblin, or move to Smeegol as suggested by Garrett - SUSE MeeGo Linux Either way as long as we have something we can always improve on it; but to improve on it we need to get more involvement from everyone. I have dropped the ball a couple of times with getting Moblin into Factory but unfortunately my employer tends to dictate where/when I have spare time.
