[opensuse-factory] Xgl/Compiz 11.0 Notes (DRAFT)
Last week Jigish (cyberorg), Matthias (mhopf), David (davidr) and I (jpr) all met to discuss next steps for compiz, compiz-fusion and xgl in openSUSE 11.0. Notes from the meeting follow (AI == action item), please respond with any questions or comments and especially any volunteering for some action items: * xgl/aiglx/nvidia configuration -aiglx -already in 10.3 -X team believes aiglx not ready as universal default -no easy way to turn it on -closer to 11.0 maybe be better for intel -don't make it default for now -AI: add easy way to turn on -AI: check as we get closer to 11.0 for intel -nvidia -AI: use native video support where possible -xgl -AI: default for hardware unless otherwise stated * video/gaming patches -xine to take advantage of video playback? no. -AI: document how to do full screen opengl games -possibly provide script * multihead -need xrandr 1.2 in Xgl -AI: David needs to hack this up soon * compiz version -compiz 0.7/0.8 ("compiz 2.0") should be usable by end of year -compiz-fusion devs already looking at git head changes -settings tools may need some significant work -could just port ccsm plugin initially -AI: ship icompiz 0.8 for 11.0 * making compiz the default -comparable gui in yast during install to turning 3D acceleration on/off -AI: make sure "compiz" should launches everything necessary -AI: talk to KDE team about KDE 4 and kwin compositing * configuration -upstream vs. distro simplified -AI: ship power configuration tool from upstream -AI: have simple config tool (or tools) for GNOME and KDE if nothing available upstream -JP -- JP Rosevear <jpr@novell.com> Novell, Inc. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org
I have 3 points: 1- What is about the ATI video cards? 2- Google Earth do'nt works with XGL (at least when I tested it). 3- The option "1-Click-uninstall" to remove easy xgl/aiglx from the system. Regards 2007/11/26, JP Rosevear <jpr@novell.com>:

It is possible to make YMPs which will uninstall packages, but one can just as easily use yast -> software management. They're primarily useful for installing packages from repositories the user's package management may not be aware of. -- Benjamin Weber --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

IMHO, "1-Click-uninstall" is just as important. It is more work trough YaST under condition that user knows what was installed, and for majority of "1-Click-Install" users that is not the case. -- Regards, Rajko. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

fglrx: Xgl at the moment. AIGLX if it runs reliably. Due to a broken SONAME in ATI's libGL (>= release 8.41) AIGLX currently does not work at all. Works for me with radeon 9550 using 8.40 drivers + XGL + compiz fusion. Is your problem the libGL.so.1 fix? - - - Google earth wont work with fglrx version of libGL.so.1.2 (hangs on splash screen). Just copy the Mesa version of libGL.so.1.2 into the folder where you installed google earth, and rename it to libGL.so.1 To get the Mesa libGLso1.2, copy the Mesa rpm into an empty folder and run: rpm2cpio Mesa<version>.rpm | cpio -idmv It will be in the extracted usr/lib folder. - - - If not that, then i hope you do get it working anyway. Then only version of the ati drivers that works for me with Google Earth, is 8.38 (without XGL). My installed google earth do'nt has libGL.so.1, it only has libGLU.so.1 from Mesa. You do not have to do the copy/paste/extract just run LD_PRELOAD=/path/to/libGL.so googleearth Ati's can be found in /usr/X11R6/lib(/usr/lib/xorg if installed manually) and mesa's in /usr/lib Cheers -J --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Google Earth works for me with this driver release (I use the RPMs from the official ATI download repo and set LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/X11R6/lib) on openSUSE 10.3 (ATI Radeon X1650), but compiz via Xgl doesn't. I can rotate the cube, but that's it. compiz via AIGLX doesn't work either, since I'm seing again "GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap is missing" although I'm setting LD_LIBRARY_PATH and I've verified via strace that ATI's libGL is loaded. I had this working yesterday. I have no idea what's going on here. Best regards, Stefan Public Key available ------------------------------------------------------ Stefan Dirsch (Res. & Dev.) * making compiz the default
I am not completely sure, but is compiz (and the more advanced features there) going to consume more power by exercising the graphic pipes more heavily? If this is the case, would it make sense to dynamically adjust the behavior depending on whether a mobile device runs on battery (similar to the automatic dimming of the screen we already do)?
