[opensuse-factory] RFC: create multimedia:libs and move media libs and GStreamer primary Factory development
Hallo. It would be nice to have a central place for multimedia libraries and codecs. Nowadays they are spread over many home:*:Factory projects. GStreamer primary development project is even GNOME:Factory and it is frozen in GNOME:STABLE:*, even if it has nothing to do with GNOME release cycle. It means that it's hard to upgrade multimedia stuff like GStreamer on released products and even test new libraries. That is why I would like to propose new repository: multimedia:libs This repository should contain latest version of multimedia libraries and codecs. It should be preferred Factory devel project for this type of packages. It is not intended for multimedia applications. It should be built for released products, so other projects can easily resource it if appropriate. I volunteer to start with my packages and GStreamer. This problem was discussed several times in past but no action was done yet, that is why I am pinging this again. -- Best Regards / S pozdravem, Stanislav Brabec software developer --------------------------------------------------------------------- SUSE LINUX, s. r. o. e-mail: sbrabec@suse.cz Lihovarská 1060/12 tel: +420 284 028 966, +49 911 740538747 190 00 Praha 9 fax: +420 284 028 951 Czech Republic http://www.suse.cz/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

What is the definition of the "multimedia" libs and codecs? I'm for a central place, and willing to move packages I'm maintaining in multimedia:audio and Factory to there. Just want to be sure... It depends. I am thinking at least about audio format libraries, video format libraries, GStreamer, AV container parser libraries, audio/video tag libraries. But I can imagine including of image format libraries, image tag libraries or even packages like babl and gegl into one central place. In this case. multimedia:photo would be based on this repo.

What's your opinion? audio+video+image or audio+video and images elsewhere? -- Best Regards / S pozdravem, Stanislav Brabec software developer --------------------------------------------------------------------- SUSE LINUX, s. r. o. e-mail: sbrabec@suse.cz Lihovarská 1060/12 tel: +420 284 028 966, +49 911 740538747 190 00 Praha 9 fax: +420 284 028 951 Czech Republic http://www.suse.cz/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

OK. For example, fftw is a library that is used by many DSP codes, but the library itself is certainly not for "multimedia". But, keeping this in multimedia:libs gives more benefits.
I think there is no reason to keep images away from others. gnash uses agg library, for example. Let's keep all general "multimedia" libs. thanks, Takashi -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

OK. Let's do it as general as possible. I will move my packages there and make it a primary Factory development project. Projects were created: multimedia, multimedia:libs Feel free to edit description and move your packages there. -- Best Regards / S pozdravem, Stanislav Brabec software developer --------------------------------------------------------------------- SUSE LINUX, s. r. o. e-mail: sbrabec@suse.cz Lihovarská 1060/12 tel: +420 284 028 966, +49 911 740538747 190 00 Praha 9 fax: +420 284 028 951 Czech Republic http://www.suse.cz/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Yes. Feel free to move your primary Factory development project there. I just updated the description to: Multimedia Libraries, Codecs and Command Line Tools This project is a central place for audio, video and image libraries for parsing multimedia data (also known as codecs), tags or containers. It is also a place for multimedia data processing libraries. Command line utilities without GUI toolkit dependencies can be placed into this project as well. Please don't place end-user GUI based applications here. Base your project on packages in this project instead. -- Best Regards / S pozdravem, Stanislav Brabec software developer --------------------------------------------------------------------- SUSE LINUX, s. r. o. e-mail: sbrabec@suse.cz Lihovarská 1060/12 tel: +420 284 028 966, +49 911 740538747 190 00 Praha 9 fax: +420 284 028 951 Czech Republic http://www.suse.cz/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org
