the problem/bug is that the wiki is out of date (happens often, there are far too few involved in keeping it updated)... the page you references says near the top that it is "Tested on openSUSE 12.2" but obviously the given command line inputs to install 12.1 is not correct for either 12.2, or the newest openSUSE which is 12.3 you may fetch any variation of openSUSE 12.3 (32 bit, 64 bit, DVD, Live CD, net install, and more) from http://software.opensuse.org/ i don't know the _best_ place to report the fault...maybe bugzilla, maybe the wiki mail list, maybe the wiki forum....but, i don't know which one is best--i'm not certain which ones might be read quickly or slowly....but, i've not noticed a lot of wiki-team participation in the forum venue for a good long while.. -- dd -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

hmmmm...i don't know how much the OP knows about how to fix the wiki...or, since they didn't immediately recognize the problem on the page, if they know enough about openSUSE to correctly repair the page...or if they would want to fix it, if they knew how.... nor did i know if they would think it "unfriendly" of me to suggest that they fix it rather than 'just' report it.....so, i didn't suggest them to fix it.. but, you may suggest that, if you wish....or maybe you want to fix the page yourself ? dd -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

You have to know what is broken first than give the best fix. Why wiki info are no more valid ? one fix could be replacing $(arch) with uname -p (but I'm not sure..) The best is to just fix it. It is wiki ... But which is the right fix ?
BTW, net installation in that way, didn't work. After dowloading few things, installation stop with an generic error. After retry, another error, this time something about repo not found... Now I'm installing from 12.2 kde-live cd. I'll switch to 12.3 (zypper dup) after installation. i _think_ it just needs each "12.1" to be replaced by "12.3",_but_ i don't know for sure...so, i won't touch it.

well, just "switching" from 12.2 to 12.3 with a "zypper dup" may or may not be the best way to go.... if you want to try that you should at the minimum fully update 12.2 FIRST....and, that is gonna be a BIG download....i think it would probably be "best" to fresh format and install 12.3 from either a live CD, net install CD or DVD... but, if you want to upgrade from 12.2 to 12.3 there are three step-by-step paths supported (but none guaranteed to be trouble free): http://tinyurl.com/35p966c http://tinyurl.com/93uemsr http://tinyurl.com/7l4m2td

The live-CD is no longer a CD, but you need to burn it on a DVD, because it is 1 GB. Maybe Daniele does not have the possibility to boot from USB or DVD or is unable to burn a DVD. Well, 4 PCs and only one of them can boot from usb and for two only cd- rom :( Now I' m upgrading an old notebook (700Mhz -256 Mb Ram) (now with opensuse 11.2). For this kind of hardware, installing the live image from boot is the best solution.. For the fix: replacing $(arch) with `uname -i` is working here (i386). The wget method is there to avoid booting from CD of USB. It only works if you have a system which boots using GRUB or using kexec. However I tried the kexec method, it boots, but does not present the promised screen from which to choose the language, screen size and the keyboard, after which you can do the installation. Will investigate further, but not now. -- fr.gr. Freek de Kruijf -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

When Intel changed from the i586 to i686 architecture, they added some new instructions. The kernels in the Live media need those instructions, but the NET install does not. My old laptop, which has an AMD K5, does not have those instructions, thus I could not boot the Live CD even when it fit on a CD. Most of my installs are net installs started using Grub from HD after downloading installation kernel and initrd only. I rarely start an installation by booting from CD, DVD or USB. Net installs are clearly slower than local media installs, but still plenty fast enough for me with an 8MB connection speed. Failures are usually limited to defects in pre-release versions, or trying to perform installation from a mirror in the process of syncing. Maybe once or twice in my whole life have I installed from any live media other than the granddaddy and supreme ruler of live Linux media, Knoppix. When trying to install to a low RAM system, be sure you have a swap partition configured before starting the installer. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." When installation is less than perfect due to mirror issues, it can be a relatively simpler matter to reinstall after mirror issues are resolved as an upgrade install than to figure out what went wrong and fix it manually. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Regardless which DE, you can make it more responsive by getting RAM up from 256M to 512M. There's a lot of used RAM around the planet from such old laptops that have ceased to function. My only functional laptop is only 600MHz and got noticeably better by going from 256M to 384M (for free). -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Hi, there is something wrong in network installation, following: http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Network_installation
under "Media free network installation" there is:
wget --output-document=oS-12.1.vmlinuz.install http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/12.1/repo/oss/boot/$(arch)/loader/...
$(arch) should be auto-replaced by i586 or x86_64
Well, here becomes i686 but on the server is i386 !
Using "Linux 32-bit Terminal" from KDE Main Menu, Applications, System, Terminals, which is Xterm that runs /usr/bin/linux32 (man linux32 for more details). :~> uname -i # hardware platform i386 :~> uname -m # machine hardware name i686 :~> arch # arch is alias for 'uname -m' i686 Regular terminal (KDE Konsole) gives in all three cases x86_64, which is correct.
So it' no clear to me if is a bug or what..
The replacement $(arch) should be only i386 or x86_64 as that is only what you can find in: http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/12.1/repo/oss/boot/ I have no operational 32 bit computer, so I can't check what is returned by utility 'arch', but it would be correct to mention that automatic recognition may fail and user should manually replace
Daniele.
P.S. I' ve replaced 12.1 with 12.3..
BTW, article in the wiki is updated. -- Regards, Rajko. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org
