Thank you! May I ask the following additional questions so that I can be better educated on this topic?
Does this patch permanently modify the .run file? (If not, may I presume that the patch has to be applied against every future snapshot update that requires the NVIDIA driver to be reinstalled?)
Will a new kernel update eventually fix the underlying problem such that this patch will not thereafter need to be applied, or will we have to hope that an updated driver will be released by NVIDIA to work with the 4.6+ line of kernels?
Thank you--as a mere user, I usually just lurk to try to learn from everyone here. This problem has impacted me directly, so I'm trying to learn by doing.
The problem is not that the kernel has a bug. Rather the kernel API has changed such that the NVIDIA code uses a feature that is no longer present in the later kernels. The patch does not permanently modify the .run file. There used to be a way to create a patched run file, but I do not remember the details. Eventually, NVIDIA will release a new version of their driver with the patches included. Until that happens, you will need to use the patch file and rerun the NVIDIA installer every time the kernel gets updated.
