I'll boot into 10.2 later and try again. But having to keep booting into 10.2 seems to me that something is unstable somewhere...

Your X server crashes (most likely the screensaver is the first OpenGL app you tried). You want to check /var/log/messages/ for various logs

It crashed in a couple of other places as well - eg, trying to run glxgears crashed it - so what I did was recompile the nVidia driver and this fixed it. Weird. But that's computers :-) .
