[opensuse-factory] A quick review of openSUSE-13.1
Hello all I would like to present a quick review of openSUSE-13.1 I installed 13.1 RC2 (openSUSE-13.1-DVD-Build0084-i586.iso) on an ***old*** HP (i915) laptop that my girlfriend uses 2 days ago. Her internet connection is wifi only. The HP machine uses the ipw2200 driver and the internet connection starts on boot and works fine. She is a heavy FaceBook user and everything works fine (tested using Firefox and Chrome). VLC, Thunderbird, Internet, video streaming also all work OK... Normally she can find bugs that I could never even imagine and she is not complaining. I had similar experiences (i.e. everything worked ok) with 2 newer Thinkpad and Sony laptops using the x64 version of openSUSE-13.1. Sidenote : VLC has been in consistent movement the last 10 days or so. It seems to be changing just about every other day. It installed fine Friday. It was updated again this morning. The week before I had to get a package from Factory in order to install it. VMwareWorkstation 10.0.1 build-1379776 came out on the 25th on October - so I took a chance and installed 13.1 RC1 x64 on my main machine[1] on the 26th. I then installed the new version of VMwareWorkstation. It worked out fine and I have been running that installation - carefully doing "zypper up", along the way - ever since. I mostly do VMwareWorkstation, films and Internet. I have no problems to report. [1] ASUS Sabertooth with a pile of RAM and disks BTW, I really like the ***new*** possiblity to add the "Extra Repositories" during the installation process. At our house we have both already moved to 13.1 and we can do everything we did before: - All the films we have tried to play (mkv, avi, etc) - play fine, Facebook and streaming works, etc. - All the apps we normally use are already available - you might have to search a bit for them[2]. [2] Example of doing a search for "vlc" http://software.opensuse.org/search?q=vlc&baseproject=openSUSE%3A13.1&lang=en Below are the 2 main "extra repositories "I use: openSUSE-13.1-Chromium http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/network:/chromium/openSUSE_13.1/ openSUSE-13.1-Packman http://packman.inode.at/suse/factory/ All and all I am quite impressed with 13.1 It was the smoothest transition that I can remember. Congratulations to all! Regards James -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Thanks for taking the time to write this, it is always encouraging to read positive reports about the current state of affairs.
