This is strange, i just updated some KDE4. I tried to load a dvd and it worked, but, because i was just trying, amarok was still playing, so i got a message that sound was not available because the card was in use, (this is strange because it can play several things at the same time(!), but ok, i shut down amarok, and restarted kaffeine. Now it cann't open the dvd, and gives same messages as above?!? -- Enjoy your time around, Oddball (M9.) (Now or never...) Perhaps your normal user is not member of usergroup "cdrom", I had something similar with OS 11.1. Add via yast. Kind regards, Peter -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Thnx for your reaction. It is most certainly not done by me. As workaround it would go. But i think it is unacceptable for a user to have to 'make himself' member of cdrom usergroup, that is just stupid. The box has to useable in total, not these stupid tricks you have to pull, just to see a movie, or burn a cd or dvd: that sucks! These kinda things realy have to be 'normal', which is: the user that has logged in, must be able to use his box, period. Root is used to maintain the pkgsystem, and alter stuf that normaly doesn't have to be altered. To me that does not include watching a movie, or burn a cd. -- Enjoy your time around, Oddball (M9.) @peter, But you were right.. after adding me to the cdrom group and logging in again, both players worked as should. It is not a big deal, but the hassle to find out what is wrong takes very much valuable time... If i imagine fresh users have to do that? You're right and older version of the OS didn't require this, least under 10.3, groups "users dialout video" were I think defaults and sufficed. Ofcourse it has to be polished. When many things change at once, and these are things that better do *not* change, because it gets worse instead of better, there are regular posts about these alterations for the worse, my opinion is to be very clear about what better does not change, because it is allright the way it is. A kind of standard, or tradition, needed to show were something stands for. In this case it is obvious, and i understand this: not being able to watch a movie without two days of searching why the player does not work, and get it to work, will not be (hopefully) the default. The OS has to serve us, to be able to make things more easy, and less time-consuming, as there only are 24 hours in the days i am familiar with, and i am allways short of hours, no matter how early i start in the morning. About my standards: Network up, Music, Mail, Browser, Good Office tools, Movies, Games. Before that, the OS has to be booted up, to make all this possible. I know that the best servant is the boss. Surely as long it does not show. I am proud of an OS that knows all (my) hardware, and how to get the best performance out of it. When all works, i like to tune and tweek it to my personal wishes and feelings, to be as comfortable as possible, working in a very good mood. I do not want, or need defaults that upset my good mood, and my positivity, because that harms me, and my surroundings. I do not know if there are people who think otherwise, but i know that my mood, determines wetter i am able to deliver a 'good' job, or not. When my mood drops, it is if my intelligence drops, and i surely don't like that. When too many unexpected things happen, that cause special attention and thus extra time from me, which i don't have, i get angry. When i get angry, i have to calm myself, and that takes valuable time. I am not in need of an OS, that is up to upset me. In that case, i have to look for one that does not. This takes much valuable time. That is why i choose to stay with what once suited me best, improve it, while preserving that what made me choose it. That is my motive. If the os changes that much, that it does not longer fullfill my needs, and i am not longer able to adjust it too my needs, it forces me to look for another. The people creating the os are responsible for the reactions they cause. If they are not logicly asking theirselves: What do i expect from the os? They will not be capable to maintain the high standards requested to stay on top, in the race. Standards have to be set. Expectations to be met. Next to this, new things can be developed and tested. Never replace too many standards, or defaults at once, or upsetting users will be caused, it is that simple. We have to guard the standards, so expectations will be met. If the expectations are met, one is happy, and up to something new, if nessesary;) Maby it sounds old school, but there is no school as the old school.. ;) (please don't loose sense of humour, and do not mistake me for the words i write..:)) -- Enjoy your time around, Oddball (M9.) But that is, as far as I know, a workaround. I understand that "ConsoleKit/PolicyKit/hal" should handle this situation and give permission to the user sitting at the chair automatically. However, if this behaviour is intentional, it should be documented in the release notes, as it is a change compared to previous permission policy. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. It runs from alt+F2: kdesu-kaffeine4
Is this the kpackagekit authority problem? Do i have to file a bug for this?
Perhaps your normal user is not member of usergroup "cdrom", I had something similar with OS 11.1. Add via yast.
But that is, as far as I know, a workaround. I understand that "ConsoleKit/PolicyKit/hal" should handle this situation and give permission to the user sitting at the chair automatically.
However, if this behaviour is intentional, it should be documented in the release notes, as it is a change compared to previous permission policy.

If i imagine fresh users have to do that? They will not go this far, but say: the video player is broken, the burner does not work, this is a crappy OS, lets go back and suffer the things we know....
One who has never driven an automoble will have similar difficulties, especially w/o an automagic transmission.
What kind of comparison is that? -- Enjoy your time around, Oddball (M9.) (Now or never...)
