[opensuse-factory] pulseaudio and third party apps

What does it take to enable sound for non-GNOME-core-apps like skype and pidgin? Skype for example shows just "virtual device" in the pulldown menus in its audio settings. The situation with pidgin is not clear, in its settings the method is set to "auto". There are other options like ALSA or ESD, but no pulseaudio. Other apps like the audio setting in control center and new mails in Thunderbird play their sounds just fine. Even totem plays Jux0MAtYxjA. How does one find out what skype and pidgin expect regarding sound output? The strace output of skype does not mention any /dev or /proc/asound access. The output 'pactl info/list' looks like shown below. I see it goes downhill in line #21 already... Select to install packages such as pulseaudio (the default is 64-bit version for 64-bit Linux), pavucontrol and alsa-plugins-pulse the default version and the alsa-plugins-pulse-32bit version. You may also install other pulseaudio packages if you wish. Next, search for "v4l". Install all libv4l* packages, including the 32-bit versions. Has anyone ever tried to contact Skype to ask for inclusion into the non-oss repo? Seems like a quite popular application after all. cu Ludwig -- (o_ Ludwig Nussel //\ V_/_ http://www.suse.com/ SUSE Linux GmbH, GF: Felix Imendörffer, Jane Smithard, Dilip Upmanyu, Graham Norton, HRB 21284 (AG Nürnberg) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Well even though as that may yet still be the case, let me point out to an alternative platform, https://www.spreed.me/ . No need to run unverified closed-source and/or proprietary software locally. I doubt most people are interested in running own conferencing host; rather being able to simply call others. Does it interoperate with skype? Can I call skype users using this software?

Skype is an insular solution, is it not? Besides the Skype software, what interoperates with it at all? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

I'm always watching out for usable alternatives and I haven't heard about this one. Now looked at their website for 10 minutes and still do not understand it. So I can use their cloud services or buy such a box myself. But this is restricted to 6 participants? Also what is the software I'm downloading. I don't see a link to the source code so I don't get the "no need to run unverified closed-source and/or proprietary software locally" point. So I guess I miss something here because it seems you've got a better understanding. Could you please give us some pointers? On PA-enabled systems, the signal via ALSA native API is routed via alsa-lib pulse plugin over PA, thus there is no direct hardware access from the application itself.
