[opensuse-factory] Problem with kupdateapplet in RC1
Hi list, I installed 11.1 RC1 (fresh install from DVD image), and have two problems with the updater applet using KDE 4.1: 1. Upgrades are not shown, even if YaST displays them. This problem appears both with the Packagekit and the zypper plugin. Is there some option that I need to turn on in addition to "show available upgrades if backend provides them"? 2. When installing patches (these are shown correctly), the first authorization dialog fails: I get an error message about missing user permissions (sorry, need to wait for the next available patches to get the exact wording). On a second try, updating starts, but I'm not asked for a password again (hence I don't think I mis-typed). 3. Even when updating starts (this again applies only to patches, I could not get upgrades of packages to show in the applet), after the first try, the same patches still showed as available. Repeating the procedure again then installed the patches. 4. The progress dialog does not report which patch is applied, it just reads "updating", with the progressbar not indicating a percentage, but going back from 0 to 100 and back continously. Does anyone else have these problems, or am I doing something wrong? No such problems here (clean install from DVD here as well). This is on a 32-bit system but you don't state which you are using. Hi, I am seeing exactly the same behaviour but I am on 11.0 + KDE4 from factory. ~/jc Basil Chupin wrote:

Hi list, some more details on the issues reported in my original post, using the same numbers as there (I cite the old mail for reference) - plus two new issues, one of them related: 1) One upgrade for "smolt" was shown in the detailed view (went away when I installed the patch). Other upgrades (provided by packman I think - naming of upgrades in YaST does not quite work, see point 6) are not shown. I added the Factory repository, and these upgrades were shown correctly. So it seems to be a problem depending on the repository - does upgrading packages from the packman repository via kupdateapplet work for anyone? 2) The problem of having to enter the root password twice seems to go away when switching to zypper. The original error message was a packagekit message, so that makes sense. 3+4) Went away when switching to zypper. 5) (more a kdesu problem than kdeupdateapplet I guess): The kdesu dialog does not have an "ignore" button, although the text says that you can press it 6) In YaST, when checking "available versions" of the newly available packages, the repository names are wrong. For example, for kaffeine, YaST shows a version "0.8.7-2.pm.2-i586 from repo_2", but in the repository manager, there is no repository with that name. This might be related to issue 1 (upgrades not shown for some repositories), since there seems to be an inconsistency with the available metadata. If I can help with fixing these issues, please let me know - I have had many problems with the updater applications (both opensuseupdater and kupdateapplet), so I'd really be happy if this would work better in 11.1 See you, Henning

I think this is fixed now.

Yes, I see this too, but I'm not sure if it is an applet problem, or packagekit API itself. Stano -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Hi Stephan,
Please, test with RC2 and if it still does not work, please, report a bug.
RC2 is not public.
So is there a way for me to test if the problem still appears? As I wrote earlier, the problem does not appear with all repositories - for example, I tried adding the factory repo and it worked, I guess adding KDE/UNSTABLE or something similar from download.opensuse.org will work as well. So please, could someone test if updating to packman packages is possible with kupdateapplet? I tested it and sadly, the problem is still there. I updated kupdateapplet, rebooted, checked for upgrades, and the applet still does not detect the updates that are available from packman. It seems that kupdateapplet does work with repositories from download.opensuse.org, but not with repositories hosted elsewhere like packman (of course this might a coincidence, I did not test too many repositories). Does this work for anyone else? Can anyone upgrade to packages provided by the packman repository using kupdateapplet for KDE4? I'd really like to know if this has something to do with my machine, or if this is a bug in the updater application. Since there is not much time before the release of 11.1, maybe I should file a bug now. The problem is that these bugs can only be found the moment that external repositories like packman are up, so this cannot be tested with previous beta versions -- otherwise I would have reported earlier. Hi Warren, thanks for your reply.

" works for you?
Yes it does (even without needing to make any of the adjustments you suggested). So I guess this shows that it's really a bug in kupdateapplet, and not a problem with the zypper backend. I have filed a bug report under https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=455756 I classified the bug as "major," since I guess many users will want to install MP3 support and similar things from the packman repository in this way, and will run into the same problems.
