[opensuse-factory] Tumbleweed status Feb 3, 2011
Here's a short note as to the status of some recent activity in the openSUSE:Tumbleweed repo: - kernel packages finally got updated to the latest .37 release thanks to some preload package help. If there are any problems with this, please file bugs, as these will also affect the 11.4 release - LibreOffice has been added to the repo. Any update problems please let me know, it might be a bit wierd with the OpenOffice_org packages being removed, but it worked for me in my testing. - I'm adding all of the yast2 packages from openSUSE:11.3 and openSUSE:11.3:Update in anticipation of a libzypp update, so you will see these packages update with no change at the moment, until libzypp is checked in. This was tested to work properly in the openSUSE:Tumbleweed:Testing repo previously and should all be safe. - aaa_base was added to the repo to get the updates that have been done in there to make this package "more sane". Any questions/concerns about these, or other recent Tumbleweed changes, please let me know. I'll try to do these types of updates whenever there's a "big" change in the Tumbleweed repo to give people an idea of what is happening. thanks, greg k-h -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

A line with multiversion = provides:multiversion(kernel) in /etc/zypp/zypp.conf doesn't work even if the previous kernel comes from the Tumbleweed repo too. As I tried last week to understand how this zypp multi kernel magic works and where it is implemented any help is welcome.

And here all ooo packages got replaced too. In opposite to the documentation at http://en.opensuse.org/Tumbleweed I call: zypper up zypper dup --from Tumbleweed I've currently enabled the oss, non-oss and update 11.3 repositories plus Tumbleweed. That's wierd. How about: multiversion = provides:multiversion(kernel-default) if "kernel-default" is your kernel package (depends on the arch and machine).

That's what I do, and is what is required. I also just do: 'zypper dup' with no "--from" lines, and if the priorities are all the same, it all should "just work".
The intention is to even get updates and fresh install packages which are not part of the Tumbleweed repository.
Yes, you still need to do that, Tumbleweed is NOT a full replacement for the 11.3 repos, nor will it be a replacement for the 11.4 repos. I'm very eagerly looking forward to an ever-lasting system. I have been running 11.3 Tumbleweed on a test box and I've kept duping it since the Tumbleweed launch. I was also very happy to get LibreOffice there since I've replaced Ooo some time ago with it. For the future, to know more about these, I have a question: Two installations: # 1. Current 11.3, and I keep duping it as 11.3 Tumbleweed. # 2. 11.4 when out, and I keep duping it as 11.4 Tumbleweed. Will I have two different ever-running installations? Or, will they be the same along time, or will 11.3 be discontinued along time and 11.4 will become _the_ ever-running dream of mine? When the current 11.2 comes to EOL I'm wishing to update my server as well as a few machines of friends that I maintain. I'm just not sure about which path to take. Once 11.4 is out, you keep the tumbleweed repos, remove the 11.3 repos and add the 11.4 repos. Then you keep "zypper dup"'ing. Same procedure, once 11.5 comes out: remove 11.4 repos and add 11.5 => zypper dup.

It will not be the same as the 11.3 based one, but will become similar over time.

No reinstall is ever needed, just point your base repos at 11.4 and do 'zypper dup' and update.

You change your base repo to point to 11.4, Tumbleweed will never be supported for any older release. I'm not quite sure about this but here's an observation, with LXDE: This sympton came with Tumbleweed, I think kernel change did it. The kernel has been updated a few times. After a change it could be that when the screen saver got activated and later the screen got blanked it just stayed that way, no matter what. This occurs in KDE as well if that matters.
