[opensuse-factory] digikam-doc needlessy updated?
Today I saw an update for digikam from 4.6.0-2.1 to 4.6.0-3.1 in factory. This came with the same for digikam-doc -- a 19.3 MiB download. Curious on what might have changed I ran "md5sum `rpm -ql digikam-doc`" before and after the update. The only difference was this: < 6c48dddeaa281f26f3067929718cbe7a /usr/share/doc/kde/HTML/en/digikam/index.cache.bz2
e6e1b8b7b18c27bc841544372e6185fa /usr/share/doc/kde/HTML/en/digikam/index.cache.bz2 < 5cb9c3b41f6a0d8562aee3d5d6f212ac /usr/share/doc/kde/HTML/en/showfoto/index.cache.bz2 c4849c0707407b18e8853e40139082f1 /usr/share/doc/kde/HTML/en/showfoto/index.cache.bz2
So, 19.3 MiB download for, hmm, really nothing? 19.3 MiB may not appear much if one sits in the office or at home with a DSL line. When I was in Indonesia earlier this year, that would have been 10-15 minutes of download in most placed, possibly with one, two, or three restarts. Any chance to avoid this kind of update? (And, are those index.cache.bz2 files really necessary?) Gerald -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

I mentioned this upstream, and they gave this suggestion: [23:44] <tosky> einar77: check fedora patches, they use a quick sed to remove the problem iirc I have tried looking, but I didn't find them, though. -- Luca Beltrame - KDE Forums team KDE Science supporter GPG key ID: 6E1A4E79

build-compare does that sed trick. But it doesn't matter. An update from 4.6.0-2.1 to 4.6.0-3.1 is a source commit with a new changelog: [ 1758s] - 1421323200 tittiatcoke@gmail.com - libkface is now a separate package. Do not use the bundled [ 1758s] - version on opensUSE 13.2 and higher. [ 1758s] + 1422100800 adrian@suse.de - old libkgeomap package provides older lib with same so name, adding [ 1758s] + an explizit requires These changes might not bring any benefit, but this is not about meinproc - it's a real change in the package and we publish real changes in packages. Er... as a trivial change can trigger a 19 MB download, couldn't delta packages be produced for factory? -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 13.1 x86_64 "Bottle" at Telcontar)

How many of them do you want to produce? People might update only every few weeks, so you need to make *lots* of deltarpms. For Geralds problem "rpm -e digikam-doc" would be the solution: nobody is going to read 19.3MB of documentation anyway, given that people do not even read short README's :-P -- Stefan Seyfried "For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for nature cannot be fooled." -- Richard Feynman -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

I don't know. I suppose one per package and per update, so of course, many. But then maybe it is possible to only produce them for large packages coupled with some other decision criteria. Perhaps it is possible to calculate the size ratio of delta to full package, then decide to publish the delta or not. And then a purge process has to clear them out after a number of days. I simply do not know if it is feasible or worth it. But not everybody has a good internet: me, for instance, I have only 1 Mbit/s connection, so tumbleweed is ruled out, plain simple... - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. I thought all these criteria were already built into OBS and it was just a matter of enabling or not. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Most definitely.
