[opensuse-factory] openSUSE and HDMI output

I have a ThinkPad E520, which has HDMI output, in addition to the traditional VGA. When I connect a HDTV via HDMI, I cannot get the monitor & TV to show the same thing, unless I set both to 1024 x 768. I can have separate displays at full resolution. Is there anyway to get both displays to show the same thing, without limiting resolution. Another issue is when HDMI is plugged in, the audio does not switch to the TV, leaving audio playing on the ThinkPad built in speakers. Both of these items work well in Windows 7, where as soon as I plug in the external HDTV, the video is duplicated and the audio switched, as it should. Why doesn't openSUSE do this? I'm running 12.1 RC1, but this likely occurs with earlier versions too. The BIOS is configured so that the HDMI connection is active. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

You probably need to install the proprietary drivers for your video card to get the best resolution on the TV. I had the same problem - I could only get the laptop to display some lower resolutions (up to 1368x768 or whatever it is) with the radeon driver. Once I installed the proprietary catalyst driver I had access to higher resolutions on the TV. For the sound the solution is simple - run 'Pulse Audio Volume Control' from the menu (install pavucontrol if it's not there) and you can control, for each running application, which sound device their output goes to. BTW pavucontrol should be installed by default as it's the only volume control app that provides this rather important functionality AFAIK. The resolution is fine. The problem is when I want both screens to show the same image, the configuration wants to change to 1024 x 768.
I'll have to look into that -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

That's what I mean though, you don't get the higher resolutions on both screens unless you have the proprietary driver. E.g. my netbook stays at its screen's maximum of 1368x768 while the TV goes up to something like 1440x1000* with the proprietary drivers, and this is showing the exact same image - the screens are set to be clones of each other. With the default (radeon open source) drivers in 11.4 I'm often limited to something like 1020x800* on both TV and netbook with the HDMI cable connected. * All numbers approx. since I'm not at home to test it Tim -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org
