[opensuse-factory] FF56 in Tumbleweed
I didn't see any mention of what I am supposed to do until I have used my second machine to figure out how much breakage FF56 creates for me with the plugins I am using and how to fix it. Hopefully that timewindow is going to be short, but if not, where would I get updates for FF52? Well, that old machine is running an Athlon64, but the installation on it is i586 from the time when it had less than 1GB memory.
Thus it seems to me there should be an i686 version of 56 available.
Maybe, but it isn't offered by zypper for that installation. Would be nice, but I don't see it. I'm currently using FF55-i686, which I got from the Mozilla-Repo on OBS. Hendrik -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

An i686 version is possible in theory and it was available in the some experiemental repo before. The problem is that the toolchain Firefox uses since FF53 is not available anymore in TW for i586 (and i686) which is rust. W/o rust for i686 in TW there will be no FF>52 in TW. I managed to convert the installation on the old machine from i586 to x86_64 without a full re-install, so I now have FF56 on there. The conversion was smooth sailing in comparison to what I am now facing with the extensions: most of what I've come to rely on either isn't ready yet (so I can't test it), their developers have thrown in the towel (i.e. these will never be updated) or the suggested replacements are lacking the very functionality I'm using. But that's not an issue for this list… So please can somebody tell me how to keep ESR52 alive on my main machine? Add the Mozilla repository to Yast. There you'll find ESR52. Cheers! Roman -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Assuming that you meant this repo: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/mozilla/openSUSE_Tumbleweed/ This seems to work after raising the priority of the repo a bit. It attempts to downgrade one package: libnsssharedhelper0 1.0.10-9.10 -> 1.0.10-1.21 which I've not done so far. Also rpm complains about a missing key: Additional rpm output: warning: /var/cache/zypp/packages/openSUSE-Tumbleweed-Mozilla/x86_64/firefox-esr-52.4.0-1.14.x86_64.rpm: Header V3 DSA/SHA1 Signature, key ID 766da614: NOKEY The key exists on the openSUSE keyserver, but I've forgot how to import it so that rpm stops complaining and searching for themessage leads to lots of unrelated advice. With FF57 now out I could do an actual test on that machine last weekend. FF57 is not faster (but it's a single core machine, so I wasn't expecting that), but does not feel much slower either. It uses significantly more memory, which was to be expected. The situation with the extensions has improved a bit, though the remaining losses are still painful: ScrapBook (Mozilla suggests MS OneNote as a replacement…), ElementHiding Helper, DownThemAll and AddonBar Restored. The functionality of a handful of other extensions I've used seems to be replaceable (not 1:1 of course, so that will take a while to set up) by switching to uMatrix. I'm still hoping for ESR52 to stick around a while longer thancurrently planned so that there's more time for the extensions to catch up. I've had a problem with my Firefox profile that required a full rebuild and I thought I might get the switch to FF58 over with at the same time. It went almost exactly as I had previously tried out on FF57. There is one UI deficiency however that I didn't notice in my tests and really didn't know how much I was relying on until now: With the old Firefox you could select or copy a URL and just paste it with a middle mouseclick almost anywhere in the browser and it would open a new tab with that URL. Is there any way to get that behaviour back?
