[opensuse-factory] Getting multiple monitors to work on openSUSE
Hi, I have a thinkpad T430 with nvidia NVS 5400 M graphics card. I have two HP monitors, where one is connected via the VGA port and another via the DVI port in the docking station. However, the opensource drivers recognize only the VGA port. The monitor on the DVI port is not even recognized. I want to use only the two desktop monitors side by side as a single big monitor and do not want the laptop monitor to be used when the laptop is in the docking station. I could get this setup working in Windows without any effort. But in openSUSE 13.1 with the default opensource driver it failed. With the proprietary nvidia driver from the nvidia repository in the openSUSE repository, I could get both the monitors detected. But the driver is very buggy. It freezes the entire display randomly and I figured that it was doing so whenever it had to change the display brightness for some reason. Also, another big problem is, it fails to boot everytime and hangs the machine after the "setting up Plymouth screen" (or some such message) in the bootscreen. If I boot via the "Integerated graphics" setting in the bios to recover from this cpu freeze on boot, I could realize that it was hanging during the "setting up acpi display brightness" thing again. I am not too sure if reporting a bug on the nvidia driver will make any progress at all, considering that even Linus has not had much progress with nvidia. Also I am not even sure where to report the bug for the nvidia proprietary driver. Now, is it possible to get the opensource driver to get the multiple monitor support working somehow ? I do not mind installing developmental patches or custom kernels if needed. Any help ? Thanks. P.S: Re-posting here after I got no response in the opensuse-xorg mailing list. -- Sankar P http://psankar.blogspot.com -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Is that with Optimus enabled or disabled in the BIOS? The T430 has an Nvidia Quadro NVS 5400M... which should be able to run as Optimus=enabled or Optimus=disabled. If Optimus is enabled, then it's no surprise that the open source driver doesn't do much more than what you described. It's also possibly why you encountered "buggy" proprietary drivers. If you simply install the Nvidia proprietary drivers onto a system that has Nvidia Optimus (either as the only config or with it enabled in the BIOS on systems that allow this), you will get loads of crashes and odd behaviour (if you can get it to boot up with video at all). I am not sure but one needs to look at what has been said about the kernel being used. I have the 5400M chip on my ThinkPad but I am also running the 'latest' stable kernel 3.13.6-2. My understanding is when I first started asking about the Thinkpad back last November when I was thinking of buying one was that the kernel which came with 13.1 could not handle this 5400M chip but that the (?)3.12.x kernel would have the ability. Well, we are now into 3.13.x. I don't recall altering any settings in my BIOS of the ThinkPad for the graphics chip and I am not having any hassles on ThinkPad. Lucky? Don't know what I am talking about? Who knows :-) . But I cannot get the wi-fi working after re-installing 13.1 on the ThinkPad :'( . Damn if I know what the problem is. I know that the wi-fi gizmo is recognised - YaST tells me so - but I cannot get it to connect to the router. But that's another story......:-) . You bought a T530, IIRC. Which WiFi card? The Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205 (lspci) works out of the box in this T430s running 13.1 using the iwlwifi driver (hwinfo --wlan). However, I use KDE4 NetworkManager and not YaST. It seem to not matter at all. I tried "Integerated Graphics" "discrete graphics" "optimus" , the all three possible options in the bios for the graphics card. With none of them, I am able to get the other monitor detected with the opensource driver. With the proprietary driver, I was able to get the second monitor detected with "Optimus" in the bios screen but there were other random freezes. What should I do now ? -- Sankar P http://psankar.blogspot.com -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org
