messages for root are being delivered ok into folder /var/spool/mail/root
but, are not getting delivered to Thunderbird's Local Folder for root
: where to look please ? : so that root's mail gets delivered to thunderbird

You have to configure thunderbird to get mails from /var/spool/mail/root
but you have to be logged int to X as root and then start thunderbird as root, which is really nothing to recommend.
Because of this, I'll not give more detailed instructions to help you shoot yourself in your foot :-)

A user can be set to receive root's mail, too :)

In YaST's mail config, you can set up postfix so it forwards root's mail to the user's account. You can set it up so that it will only accept local mail, then point Thunderbird at /var/spool/mail/username
