openSUSE Release Engineering Meeting 12.01.2022
All meeting minutes can be found here: https://etherpad.opensuse.org/p/ReleaseEngineering-meeting Meeting is hosted here https://meet.opensuse.org/ReleaseEngineeringMeeting ## Attendees guillaumeg, DocB, dleuenberger, lkocman, Sarah, ddemaio, rbrown, mlin, deneb_alpha, gp ## Leap Will be on vacation 15th - 26th Jan EOL announcement for Leap 15.2 on news.o.o? we should yes Also early annoucement of code submission deadline for Beta on Feb 16th https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Roadmap Leap Micro 5.2 initial setup requested https://etherpad.opensuse.org/p/ReleaseEngineering-leap-micro-discussion-202... We'll have to do the setup (vacation seasson is comming to end) Working towards any SLES-side blockers on community features prior my vacation https://code.opensuse.org/leap/features/issues armv7 tasks are still missing in Release Checklist for Leap 15.4 https://github.com/openSUSE/openSUSE-release-process/blob/master/Alpha.md What makes me bit worried is to ensure we do not skip any translation tasks this release. As the scope of what's needed is bit unclear with re-using of SLES binaries. Any supervising/documenting on this part would be highly welcome. NEW WALLPAPER FOR 15.4 BY SUSE BRAND TEAM github.com/openSUSE/branding/issues/ Still in the middle of discussion Package submission to Leap 15.4 for community user is a nightmare: If submission not ending up in SLE-15-SP2 by mistake, Rejected as it should go to openSUSE:Backports:SLE-15-SP4, rejected again as it is a SLE package. As deadline for 15.4 submission (16 Feb?) comes closer we should think about improvements to this workflow ## openSUSE Tumbleweed * GNOME 41.3 published * KDE Full stack (Frameworks, Gear, Plasma) updates in snapshot 0111 * Python 3.6 being EOL, the python36-FOO modules are no longer being built (in theory: binaries only vanish on successful rebuild of the package, so as of snapshot 0109 we still have 226 python36-* modules left) * pythoin310-* modules are being built and published (currently 3264 pkgs vs 3591 for python 3.8) * Ruby 3.1, incl. switch of default ruby, is in Staging:L - apparmor missing ## Richard (Kubic/TW MicroOS) Investigating https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1194574 which seems to hinder the automatic rollback functionality everyone expects from MicroOS/Kubic k8s 1.23.0 was released Lots of Kubic submissions over the Christmas holiday (k9s, SELinux packages for rke, k3s, etc) - thanks to everyone in the community who's contributing. Experimented with kiwi-less, container-first VM image building. Have a working prototype that works entirely in OBS, builds a container using a Dockerfile, takes that container then converts it to a working, bootable, openSUSE VM. Investigating adding nerdctl support to Toolbox Investigating buildkit and its limits as a container builder working on a tool to convert existing Tumbleweed (and maybe also Leap) systems to MicroOS and/or MicroOS Desktop ## Max * Updated 15.4 NonFree package from Factory NonFree * Backports got qt6, waiting for qt5 5.15 update accepted to SLE, then lets see how many kde apps being affected * Drop python2: the first step, make sure packages in Backports has converted to python3 as much as possible, the next step is working on skippkg-finder so it will add python2 to NON_FTP_PACKAGES, ie. drop from ftp-tree * Build status: 46 build failures, 1 unresolvable, still has a tons of submissions pending for legal review, those update should make build failure going down again. Python package build failure in Backports seems need python packaging team involving. * SLE should rebuild gstreamer-plugins-good and ffmpeg in order to get rid of libvpx4 after we have libvpx7 in SLE15 SP4 * Fish - movement from SLE to Leap ## Guillaume - Arm Tumbleweed: * Rolling * Few rebuilds triggered manually for python-* packages since some were not rebuilt since pyton 3.10 enablement leading to some unresolvables. => We will set rebuild mode to 'direct' to handle this. Leap 15.4: * opencl-headers package is outdated in Leap 15.4 / SLE15-SP4: https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1193617 This prevent armnn to build with opencl support enabled. => This should be fixed by https://build.opensuse.org/request/show/944701 * armv7: * Publish of oss repo and ISO is now fixed. * armv7 images are not tested in openQA yet, because JeOS-efi image does not build properly due to a kernel bug with btrfs and lzo compression: https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1193852 ## Sarah - s390x * Tumbleweed release not because he installation is in stuck after the reboot for finishing the installation (systemd related). Fedora, Debian and SLES are also affected: - https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1193889 - https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1986176 Question: That is a Z specific bug for systemd. Who is responsible for that, if the bug comes from Fedora Rawhide via upstream, if we are responsible for the basesystem? Other bug: PostgreSQL (bug forwarded to IBM) https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1190740 -> dependency to https://bugzilla.suse.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1188896 A bugfix from IBM has been tested together with the PostgreSQL14 build. It seems, that it would be fixing the issue. Another workaround (provided bz the GCC Developer at IBM) is to use 12GB of memory for a build because of oom with 4 or 8GB. That is working also in a constraints file as a workaround. s390x kernel issue seems to be looked at https://bugzilla.suse.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1192454 (should be under a public product SP3). IBM has been starting with testing openSUSE Tumbleweed. First external bug report has been resolved. Kick-off meeting of the Linux Distributions Working Group at the Open Mainframe Project has happened together with Debian and IBM. We identified the related example bug above, which should have been fixed together. ## Doug * openSUSE Conference * Contract is being signed * Will start regular meetings on Tuesdays. (begins Jan. 18 at 19:00 UTC - https://meet.opensuse.org/meeting) * Will start CfP soon * Google Summer of Code * Timeline - https://developers.google.com/open-source/gsoc/timeline * Application peroid from Feb. 7 to 21 (deadline) * Reply to email if interested in mentoring * Marketing items sent for SCALE * Community meetings resume - https://etherpad.opensuse.org/p/weeklymeeting * Worked on some payments issues from missing invoices * Need follow up with LFCE * Virtual Devconf.info (End of Jan) looking for a speaker for What's new in OBS and how to build in OBS for various distributions Leap 15.4 Beta testing t-shirts will we have budget this year? ddemaio - Yes ## Dirk Not available ## Gerald / Board No update. ## Wolfgang (Package Hub), Scott Bahling Not available ## Maintenance team (Marina or Marcus, Maurizio (m4u)) - Marina: working on opencl-headers (SLE side of bsc#1193617) ## Adrian - openSUSE Step Step requires some more discussion as there seems to be no current buy- in from SLE nor Maintenance team. Gerald: let me know if I can https://etherpad.opensuse.org/p/lkocman-draft
