Try rebuilding your RPM database
rpm --rebuilddb

Once upon a time rebuilding the @system repository helped. Thanks! I went even more aggressive and simple "rm -rf"ed /var/cache/zypp, after all it's supposed to be a cache only. :-) Still no change during the next round of updates (that is, duplicate packages), but when I ran "zypper dup" again last week, all those duplicates were taken care of and the next round today did not introduce new ones. So, either there was a bug somewhere that got fixed, or that system really was in a weird state which got addressed somehow.
