[opensuse-factory] recommended way to install tumbleweed?

Hello, I try to install Tumbleweeb on a Dell Optiplex 755 with 4Gb ram and it fails repetidly net install, the officially recommended way fails with a lot of errors (package not found), kde do not install, xfce neither. live kde boots and run without problem the main problem looks like grub can't install, even with the minimal install (no graphical, no osprobe...) the usual method of rescue (mount --bind then chroot) fails with chroot error last time I installed Tw, I could install 13.2, change repos and zypper dup, but now with Leap I don't think it's still possible of course I can still install 13.2, but I rather think there must be something easier! anyway install of 13.2 works like a charm... and by the way sha1 from this page https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Tumbleweed_installation or http://download.opensuse.org/tumbleweed/iso/ at least for 64 bits Net install do not fit on the first page the link go to "current" and the iso links to "media", the sha1 are different and none fits the iso sha1 #sha1sum openSUSE-Tumbleweed-NET-x86_64-Snapshot20160105-Media.iso 546d4c08ef6123ea45c812d8690440e767f5069a openSUSE-Tumbleweed-NET-x86_64-Snapshot20160105-Media.iso (same result with two different downloads) and sha file: -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA256 2fe79354b86b6e02810f1dd4bbc90d21b579c054425102996404859f95a1c955 openSUSE-Tumbleweed-NET-i586-Snapshot20160105-Media.iso -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.0.7 (GNU/Linux) iQEVAwUBVowDQ7iLL9Q9vcKEAQhyqwf/REU/+Xs6H2+p//G6c+H9mmGSnKtVHe0+ aCfPCvRUVK96cuLPoq4LkPe1eu8JnOHQvNRdfOL+yONiSEwxoOZHu5X6rWMlTeMx 0ng7OgvIDSsXBqAXOxNmpj8EPDw5hsXbRIcKmzVGfrvtriGZwnZK1LRWfdTw4qe+ sdyNWIE7lr+fPWEHY+0ZVcBcwUKhqmQZgwuwQQ2/WgfB0xmmZ+mr+GGJ3piV04Im 2XkuzFeOLzATMid+YQS6zC69pteWkPnOnpI+YfQoWpP3U4Kfxsd2y0TruBhEuIfs FHYbOqw0JwGqN64NRUZkSZkVf5WiMPZIA6OahgTZuhq75ABEH/hlhw== =+SDM -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- sha1sum -c openSUSE-Tumbleweed-NET-i586-Snapshot20160105-Media.iso.sha256 sha1sum: openSUSE-Tumbleweed-NET-i586-Snapshot20160105-Media.iso.sha256 : aucune ligne de somme de contrôle SHA1 trouvée jdd -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

FWIW, I have TW installed on Optiplexes: 620 745 760 780 as well as many other machines. All installations are fully funcitonal on multiboot and were done via HTTP, initialized via Grub loading previously downloaded installation kernel and initrd. A 755 I don't have, but it has been told to me that the 755 has a BIOS that not unusually causes installation trouble with Linux, so you may want to investigate outside the openSUSE forums for possible clues to your trouble. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Depends. If it only offers Grub2, then yes, without, and I install it later so that it can be chainloaded to. I never install bootloader to MBR. Most booting here is done directly from active primary partition with Grub that I install and manage. It does not get mounted ever to /boot. On some machines I use IBM's Boot Manager from OS/2, in effect always chainloading Linux, instead of using Grub on a primary. openSUSE's and Fedora's Grub2 has never been installed on any of my own machines. I tried Mageia's Grub2 once or twice before removing it. My only Grub2 installations are on *buntus and maybe a Linuxmint or two. Those installers corrupt the partition table, forcing me to delete and recreate the first logical after any time they write to one.

Yes, I would also not recommend this as Leap is based on quite a different set. But if a snapshot of Tumbleweed fails you could use an older one or just 13.2.
You are making the mistake of calculating sha1sum when it actually is sha256sum as correctly specified in the checksum filename as well as on the wikipage. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

This sounds like the kernel does not support the hardware. Without details one can just guess. Open a terminal with alt+ctrl+shift+x and run dmesg to check for IO errors. Not very helpful. alt+ctrl+shift+x works in the installer, check if dmesg contains IO errors. Or inspect /var/log/YaST2/y2log why some packages can not be installed. By doing the installation once again, one the first error popup appears press ctrl+alt+shift+x and run 'dmesg | less -S', then look for IO errors. The initial dmesg output is /var/log/boot* I think. Use 'journalctl', without arguments you can just page around using the default less keys (/ ? & etc are handy for searching). It also does lots of nifty things, like narrowing in on a particular set of boot logs - 'man journalctl' for lots of details :) Daniel -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

I give an answer to my question: I finally could make a successful install with the 64 bits dvd (20160105) and minial X install.
