[opensuse-factory] Dropping zfs-fuse from Factory
Hi, is anyone interested in taking over zfs-fuse maintainership in Factory? If not, I'll send a deleterequest at the end of next week. Upstream is still reponsive on the mailing list, however they are not interested in updating the codebase which only supports zpool version 26 whereas the rest of the world (ie. Illumos, FreeBSD, ZFSonLinux) has moved on to version 28 and feature flags. Since zfs-fuse's only reasonable use-case is interoperability it has IMO outlived its usefulness. I've long upgraded my zpool version since I want to take advantage of new features introduced by Illumos and I would expect most Illumos/FreeBSD users to do the same. -- Guido Berhoerster -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

I think a DR should be held off until the package does not build anymore. There is significant work involved getting a package back into Factory again, because it would count as a new package and thus shown up on legal-team's action list. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Actually not, the legal team keeps track of package names and its license. Greetings, Stephan -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Still I believe that someone stumbling over an abandoned factory package is more likely to pick it up than were it only in the develprj. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

That's a different argument Greetings, Stephan -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Being scared of legal review is not a reason to keep a useless package in Factory. If, as Guido says (and I do trust him on this), the usecases for the package are no longer given, there is absolutely no reason to keep the package around. If, at any future moment in time, it might be bumped to live in sync with the feature set expected, it can re-enter. And, frankly, the legal team is doing a great job at reviewing things... It's no longer an issue that blocks a package for weeks from entering Factory (besides, the package name very likely will keep on figuring in the databases they maintain.. so a direct lookup is still possible). @Guido: if you don't hear from any actual user about this, I would say go ahead and remove (maybe getting some feedback on non -factory ML might be in order, as that's where we could likely interact more with users) Dominique -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

I'd just like to add to the above that my main rationale for removing it is that I no longer make use of it and that I think having a largely untested package in Factory is not a good idea, particularly in case of a filesystem. If anyone relies on it he can still use the package from the filesystems project.

I hope that potential maintainers read this list, but considering that people might be on vacation I can give it a bit more time until I get back on September 6th. -- Guido Berhoerster -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org
