[opensuse-factory] openSUSE 11.4 RC1, Overheat after Making a Mobile Broadband
Hello developers, I hope this bug will be fixed in time. My computer[0] got overheat (85 C, 86 C, 87 C, .. and keep raising), until booted down itself, though it hanged in the middle of it and I had to press the button down by my self. I could not see what happened in a boot-down log when it hanged. It always happened when I made an Internet connection through Mobile Broadband[1], even I did not yet lunch Firefox, the performance went slower, and when I saw the 'powertop', it showed: https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/OeSVet7GuQLovgyVFgXzfQ?feat=directlink The issue existed since I tried openSUSE 11.4 Milestone 5, I thought it was related to bnc#665439, I disnt know, so I did not watch it carefully, added my issue there, or fill new bug, until I find it still remains until RC1. The issue sometimes came even I did not make the mobile broadband connection, just plug it to the USB socket, then in (about) a or two minutes, the computer's temperature gets hotter and the performance goes slower. I don't have such issue when playing in openSUSE 11.3 nor 11.2. How should i provide useful information, so will become to the resolvable bug? [0] ASUS EEEPC 1201T

Just in case people do not understand what my problem is. Here are the screen-shots i (get lucky in time) can show you that my computer was getting boot-down because of over-heat, after making a (USB) 3G mobile broad connection (sorry for bad title of this thread because i was in a hurry ): Picture-0: My computer is still off-line, do not connect to any network interfaces yet. http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/QbtEggrbiHeMJiWjdUxR4A?feat=directlink Picture-1: My computer is now on-line, connects to 3G Modem interface (/dev/ttyUSBx). https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/HscR6iO4eYBeW4Z8X6xGzg?feat=directlink Picture-2: My computer's temperature is rising, geting hotter, in about 2-3 minutes later (see KDE's Digital Clock, bottom-right corner). There are no other applications running except Konsole opening 4 tabs; Tab1. running 'tail -f /var/log/messages , Tab2. running 'top', Tab3. running 'powertop', and Tab4. running 'cat /sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone/temp). https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/VPIhWqneQ_j15UexObIW_Q?feat=directlink Picture-3: I think the cause is something that triggers this high value in the powertop's table : https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/FRUR3NkYe9QTsXUUd4XiMA?feat=directlink or see my previous screen-shot: https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/OeSVet7GuQLovgyVFgXzfQ?feat=directlink I think it is worth to fill new bug. Is it related to kernel or X server ? Thanks. Best regards, -- Andi Sugandi. By appending "usbcore.autosuspend=1" in the kernel parameter? su -c 'grep autosuspend /boot/grub/menu.lst' Password: kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.37-22-desktop root=/dev/disk/by-id/ata-Hitachi_HTS545032B9A300_091209PBP300Q6ED0V6M-part1 resume=/dev/disk/by-id/ata-Hitachi_HTS545032B9A300_091209PBP300Q6ED0V6M-part6 splash=silent quiet showopts vga=0x317 usbcore.autosuspend=1 The issue still persists. The other question is why the issue never happen (get freezed) in openSUSE 11.3, though the avg residency also reach 100% in powertop's utility? https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/J5Ssi9I2IBMZtaVq6YLR9w?feat=directlink Thanks. No, but switching it on with powertop. The parameter controls the heuristics but does not switch on the feature. Regards Oliver -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

By typing letter "U" like told in this screen-shot? https://picasaweb.google.com/andisugandi/OpenSUSE?feat=directlink#5574487497... unfortunately, the issue still remains. OK, the device does have a mass storage interface, which isn't capable of runtime power management at present. You need to unbind the storage driver from it to do power management. Thanks for wonderful helps lately. I think it should not happen in later versions of openSUSE as it was never found such an issue in its earlier versions. So this is now important to file a bug (related to kernel?). Before filling a bug, I will also try if fresh-install will auto-magically solve this problem.. =) Best regards, -- Andi Sugandi. How to unbind it? By using 'modprobe -r usb_driver_name' ?

The issue still remains actually (getting hotter** & slower performance), but without being freezed. https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/L3ublkFlIO1ZUDTqVpxD0Q?feat=directlink *) https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=673944 **) $ cat /sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone0/temp 88000 Best regards, -- Andi Sugandi.
