[opensuse-factory] Check-ins of openSUSE:12.2:Update vs pass through devel projects
Hi all, I just realize that some packages apparently are entering openSUSE:12.2:Update without passing through their devel projects / openSUSE:Factory. Whereas I of course see that some devel projects move further compared to the freeze in 12.2, I still think it is absolutely crucial that the devel-projects receive the fixes as well, so that they can also enter openSUSE:Factory. I did see in the past that patches went to a release, never did it in Factory and Release+1 had the bug back... things, that could easily be avoided with some minimal 'follow the rules' processes. Important in this case of course would be that the Maintenance team and the package maintainers / devel project maintainers stay in contact about updates... I think, that's something that can be expected. Just looking for thoughts. It's not about blaming or flaming. I'm ONLY interested in improving the process! (This is also why I don't want to give references to any particular incident.. the people affected have been informed by means of bugzilla.. this is sufficient). Thanks for bringing the topic up. It's not 12.2 specific though. It's a generic problem with update handling for all releases. AFAIK it is possible to have devel projects also for released products though. Just a matter of setting some attribute on the packages in question I think. cu Ludwig -- (o_ Ludwig Nussel //\ V_/_ http://www.suse.de/ SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, GF: Jeff Hawn, Jennifer Guild, Felix Imendörffer, HRB 16746 (AG Nürnberg) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

I don't think we'd want devel projects for released products: if they're the same as Factory devel projects, then it won't work (a package in the devel project is obviously too recent for 11.4, for instance), and if they're different devel projects, they wouldn't help solve this specific issue. For 12.2, the issue is really visible as 12.2 and Factory are so close to each other. This makes it easy to spot missing fixes in Factory. What can be done is some additional step in the maintenance workflow, to check (or ask the maintainers of the package to check) if the fix is already in Factory. But it'd be making the workflow even less "fun" that it is today...
