[opensuse-factory] Help Wanted: Move YaST tutorials from forgeftp.novell.com to openSUSE WIKI
Hi, I've added a new idea to idea.opensuse.org | Move YaST tutorials from forgeftp.novell.com to openSUSE WIKI | http://idea.opensuse.org/content/ideas/move-yast-tutorials-from-forgeftp.nov... We are currently working on implementing features and that's why the documentation is a bit loosing at the end of the queue. On the other hand, moving those YaST tutorials can: * Help you to gain a respect from openSUSE community as well as from YaST developers :) ;) * Help you to understand YaST a lot more Additionally, this is not only about moving some texts somewhere else, you are expected to bring new ideas, new tutorials, you can realize your dreams :))) * * * * * More about idea.opensuse.org: It's a web/page for sharing ideas how to improve (openSUSE) Linux and also implementing those ideas. Maybe you are good designer but can't write in any programming language. Maybe you can just write in Perl or C++ and you are really good at it :) ... idea.opensuse.org is the best way to go! File an idea there or pick already filed one. * * * * * Thanks in advance Bye Lukas PS: YaST developers and their (development-related) help can be found also on IRC at irc.freenode.net, channel #yast -- Lukas Ocilka, YaST Developer (xn--luk-gla45d) ----------------------------------------------------------------- SUSE LINUX, s. r. o., Lihovarska 1060/12, Praha 9, Czech Republic

The first 'tutorial' is more about where YaST-related files are stored and whet they are good for, terminology, etc. (a very short one). The second tutorial is about "How to simply create a new YaST module step by step". How to build it and use it. I don't think there need to be a tutorial about "How to use YaST" :))) Bye Lukas -- Lukas Ocilka, YaST Developer (xn--luk-gla45d) ----------------------------------------------------------------- SUSE LINUX, s. r. o., Lihovarska 1060/12, Praha 9, Czech Republic

you think badly. at least some YaST modules neeeds badly a howto (for example the printer module) for example the help here: Fichier PPD Sélectionnez un fichier PPD ici. (probably in english: PPD file Select a PPD file here) is specially dumb. At least it should give the meaning of the acronym and say for example: "ppd files gives the definition of the printer properties, you may find one on the printer cd or on the printer manufacturer web site" a link to a detailed PPD file syntax should be usefull. some years ago, printer where shipped with a manual giving all the internal commands. Making he's own PPD file may be that difficult with correct data. don't answer about the printer here, it's not the scope of this mail - just an example of what lacks. jdd -- http://www.dodin.net --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

please don't worry. I just jumped a little too fast on the keyboard and, reading my mail, I find it too (much too) harsh. I appreciate greatly your work. I only think you underestimate the need of documentation :-) jdd -- http://www.dodin.net --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Easy :) It's true that several YaST modules would need help from our users. Yes, we are well aware of that and we are constantly pushing hard to make our modules more and more useful. Some examples: * Fully-open our development SVN (the newest YaST source code) (we accept patches) * Fully-open YaST documentation (we accept patches) * Generated documentation at http://forgeftp.novell.com * Fully-open IRC (irc.freenode.net) * Fully-open yast-devel@opensuse.org maililing-list However, it's also true that our view is a bit shaded by the knowledge we have. We'd appreciate if the community helped us to see what they don't understand well, why is that hard to understand, and how to improve the current state. What we need is the users' feedback, ideas, opinions, or even patches ;), ... As you certainly know, I've asked the openSUSE community what they wanted from YaST SSH Configuration module, I wanted to hear their opinion on the current implementation, labels, helps, etc. There hasn't been much feedback, but frankly, YaST SSHD is almost 'unused' YaST module ;) For the YaST documentation, there is a openSUSE manual available and also WIKI page for every single YaST module: http://en.opensuse.org/YaST/Modules Your example (YaST Printer): http://en.opensuse.org/YaST_Printer Well, tell us what you want :) Please. indeed. I try to document fully most of the work I do, because after a time it's no more possible to understand the problems I once had :-) We'd appreciate if the community helped us to see what they
don't understand well, why is that hard to understand, and how to improve the current state.
I try to help as much as possible, but time is in short supply and being french I often first make docs in french, altough I try to make them in english when I can
What we need is the users' feedback, ideas, opinions, or even patches ;), ...
I'm not a programmer, so no patch from me :-(

I use very often ssh, but sshd is default on most SUSE for long (or default on my install for so long I forget it) ssh'ing to a Linux server was always one of my first course as linux teacher, as this is kind of "black magic" for most windows users :-))
For the YaST documentation, there is a openSUSE manual available and also WIKI page for every single YaST module: http://en.opensuse.org/YaST/Modules
Your example (YaST Printer): http://en.opensuse.org/YaST_Printer
for example, why is not the printer page under YaST/modules/printer??? why the software management module odc don't warn about the necessity of first setting the install source? we (not only you and me :-) should make a task sheet (check list) of a first install and the steps mandatory for a good install and the ones that could be let aside for leter (and how find them back) (etc) jdd -- http://www.dodin.net --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Not yet moved there. But YaST/Modules/Printer is definitely the correct location. In my reorganisation of the YaST-pages I did not touch these sites. But as it is a wiki everybody is invited to help :) Ciao, Daniel -- J. I just moved all modules pages and changed the links. Ciao, Daniel -- J. don't !! looks like making several subpages levels is not that good (see other thread) and this was just an example jdd -- http://www.dodin.net --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Done. You can see wiki: recent changes. Daniel made quite some effort to bring all related pages presented in the same way. That it gives some of us headache is another question. We have to establish new guidelines, so that at least frequent editors do all in the same way. Wiki is no more little pet that can be moved around at will, and it is still growing, thanks to guys like Daniel that are not afraid of work. -- Regards, Rajko --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

That is a good idea. Then we need to define what we agree on first.
Wiki is no more little pet that can be moved around at will,
Well you can - at least I did :) But I had an idea behind and wanted to get at least some structure for our YaST pages. Before that everything was floating around and was not linked anywhere. Now as the pages are organized we got a navigation bar for free, so you can navigate through the levels. And as authors have to think of where to put his new page they should be motivated to link it from the level above and add links (eg. in "See also" section) on pages of the same level (if applicable). I regard this as a major feature to help people find the information they need. If pages are lost in the nowhere (only can be found by full text search) without links this does not help anybody.
and it is still growing, thanks to guys like Daniel that are not afraid of work.

In opensuse-wiki: http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-wiki/2007-12/msg00001.html One of ideas is to reduce usage of subpages. Please see if you can come up with some idea(s). -- Regards, Rajko --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org
