[opensuse-factory] This needs fixing.. We look like idiots.... We generally are not. :)
Folks, Please read carefully both: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=731812 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=716291 I am not one to whine about technical decision but this needs some attention. Nice I moved to RHEL... 45.13€'s are worth the trouble of not being called an idiot by such an honorable public figure. I just wonder most of your users could have the same treatment, and that the board would actually care about the current members as you seem to care about public figures. 2011/11/22 Peter Linnell <mrdocs@opensuse.org>:

Before stating such allegations you should check the chronology of actions taken regarding that issue and Linus' post. Sven -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org
I think you got it wrong... There's no issue with Linus or anyone else, in fact what he claims is what many people over the last days complained, in mailing lists, IRC and friends... The difference is that no one jumped forward to give them some voice or even took them seriously. That's no allegation it's a fact :) 2011/11/22 Sven Burmeister <sven.burmeister@gmx.net>:

Yes it's annoying for the people feeling they are right but nobody cares. But also it's natural that Linus got more attention than others because after following his public actions last 20 years he simply is more trustworthy than others you don't know. If Linus is calling you an idiot then you probably think "Could be that he is right.". If I call you an idiot than I don't expect you to belief me. That's ok ;) cu, Rudi -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Please read the bug reports at bnc and gnome to learn that action was taken long before Linus posted by openSUSE staff. Sven -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Truth has its value independent of the person who emits it. That is the beauty of science.. Otherwise we will transform us in a sect... In this case the problem was pointed before by quite few people... and it is worked on. The main problem is the paranoia of the security team... who cannot accept that the rest of us live in a world where we need to be in control of our wireless...

It is the security team's job to be paranoid, and the our job to make the software good enough and persuade them that it can be trusted. It doesn't help to set up an 'us and them' split with black and white statements - at some point you'll (as a telepathy IM client packager you personally sooner than most, BTDT) be glad of their rigour and attention to detail. If you've been following the bugs you'll see that Ludwig submitted a patch earlier today to permit org.fd.NM.settings.network.own to the active user, but so far has (rightly IMO) not allowed wifi sharing because it a) runs a DHCP server, making the user effectively a network admin for all local networks and b) pokes iptables rules without consideration for the suse firewall. Who wrote anything about having an issue with Linus? It is only about you suggesting that the issue was only taking seriously after Linus raised it and everybody else before that was called an idiot by openSUSE staff/devs – which you repeat again in the following.
The difference is that no one jumped forward to give them some voice or even took them seriously. That's no allegation it's a fact :)
Well, if (long before Linus posted) taking the problem upstream, voicing users' concerns and discussing how to solve it with the NM devs is not giving them a voice or acting without them being public figures – you might have been right. Yet it's a fact that openSUSE dev(s) took care of this issue long before Linus filed it and long before you posted your "facts". I guess you were not too interested in reading that thread or the bug reports about it and thus skipped the facts and jumped to allegations and polemics straight away. Sven Clarify please? I find what you say confusing. How was our policy kit choices an upstream issue? Generally the attitude regarding this I percieved was, "This is for security purposes and come from SUSE. Sorry you don't like it, but tough." I'm not being rhetorical, but I am getting some cognitive dissonance. -- Roger Luedecke openSUSE Ambassador Ind. It's all in the bug reports which were part of that thread, e.g. the one upstream at gnome. The policykit defaults are not the only issue. Don't confuse what's on the mailinglist with the work done behind the scenes, i.e. within the bug reports. And this is the point where this nice little thread stops :) The issue is discussed in bugzilla and moves to a resolution. Thanks for your consideration.
